Walmart oil prices - Ah!

M1 ESP 0W-30 is now showing as $31.97 for me.

One of the TLE guys was out picking some oil for a customer. He remarked that they were being told this wasn’t the last price increase. Not sure if he meant off the shelf, or for their oil change service.

Look at this 'ole peach. Not sure how old you are but these were everywhere when I was a kid, rarely in the 5spd.
This one was loved https://bringatrailer.com/listing/1980-honda-accord-16/
My friend had one in high school, that same color, in 5 speed. I had a '75 VW Scirocco MT that took some abuse then started rotting out bad.

I ended up with an '83 Civic 1500 S, MT for a couple years into college. Tranny went, couldn't pass up dad's old Malibu wagon for $1000.

I searched 4 "local" Walmart's on line after @Duukt mentioned the details. The other 3 were at higher price but the one he listed was at "original". These are all within 30 miles of each other and all on my way home from work. I ordered a 3 pack of 5qt jugs of 0W-20 for pick up Monday morning just because I have no willpower.

Added thought on the "taking advantage". Maybe they did mean to leave it that way or on some listed lower price to move inventory. Many places do that with other clearance / door buster other sales. Would you go and buy it if it was listed at full price? Companies pay a lot for storing inventory plus what they paid. They may want to move it out for that reason. Cheaper price gets more customers. I know I have bought many things I was "watching" but really not mandatory yet and then a flash deal comes and I'm like save a bunch of $$$ over stuff I might need at full price in 3 months (like tires).
Went to WM for my pickup. They came out with one VRP 0W-20 and 2x Valvoline Advanced Protection 0W-20. I said the 2 were wrong so they went back inside. Came out like 10 minutes later said they had no more VRP 0W-20, just the 1 jug. He asked if i wanted to cancel it or other options. I said if you have 5W-20 Restore and Protect, I'll take 2 of those and the one original.

That's my concern as well moving foward. How much will manufactures reformulate with alternatives to keep sales up.

I would rather they adjust in order to help keep the masses in oil, versus sticking to what they are doing and running short. If that is the boat they are in, they may be okay just tight.

It was reported here recently Walmart was among the first retailers the majors were going to restrict or cut off from new stock. If that's true it is certainly understandable why they are raising prices.

I have bought so much oil from Walmart cheap over the years I will give them this one.

Castrol Extended Performance is still $26, grab one while you can
Absolutely. If i didnt already have a three year reserve, I'd be creating one at this point with that oil. I expect a quality product like Castrol EP will be going for $60 in the not too distant future- if it's even available. And I'm someone who has never stocked up on oil before.

I have about 18-24 month supply right now. I know oil is supposed to be good for 5 years but I do worry about additives falling out kf suspension. I do shake the bottles once a month or every chance I remember but I’m leery of buying more right now.

I have purchased oil a number of times on eBay over the past 18 months. (Though most of my oil purchases are directly from Walmart.com or Amazon.com and continue to be)
1) The eBay sellers are always slow to ship...one to three weeks before shipment, so be patient or plan ahead.
2) About 1/3 of the time, they will randomly cancel your order and say it was by your request.
3) 2/3 of the time they come through, and 80% of the time it drop ships from Walmart, the other 20% is from Rock Auto or some other online retailer. Only once did I receive oil directly from the seller. I have never received counterfeit, or used oil, as some suggest is a risk.

I was not aware of triangulation schemes until it was brought up by users on this forum to me about a year ago (user @tired ?). As a long time, buyer and seller on eBay (25 years), I now suspect at least (from observation and my own buying patterns) 5% of all sales on eBay are from some form of this triangulation fraud. I have no other explanation for such below market prices on products that are drop shipped by national retailers. So, triangulation fraud seems a plausible explanation, buy I cannot prove or confirm it.

This is not unique to motor oil, you can scan around on eBay and see unusually low prices on tools, household goods, health & beauty aids, pretty much anything that can be purchased online and delivered by a third party retailer. I remember hearing on the news 15 years ago, eBay was where physical retail theft items were fenced...seems criminals found a way to not even have to leave their house or handle the goods.

Oh very interesting, thanks for explaining that. Ive seen plenty of things at competitive pricing with distant shipping locations listed, I could never wrap my head around what the angle was, I can see now why they do so

I got a jug of Valvoline Max-life 5w-20 on sale at Menards for $19.97. Good thing I did, as my daughter stopped in for the "Hey dad....i need an oil change..."

I should have bought 2 I guess.

Walmart has long been the cheapest place to buy oil - with individual exceptions here and there of course - like Kirkland for example - but you need to be a member, and occasionally Mr. Bezos. We have been talking about Group 3 shortages for a couple months yet no price increase at walmart at all until now.

Now all of the sudden its walmarts fault?

Truly a stretch.
I think you're giving Wal-Mart too much credit. They are always first to take advantage of the customer by jumping on the price gouging train as early as they can. The Menards, Home Depot, Blains Farm & Fleet around me haven't hiked up prices one bit. Just bought Quaker State FS 5W30 for $20.97 yesterday as my local Menards. It's now $29.97 at Wal-Mart. Both likley still residual stock they purchased several months ago as the box manufacture date is April of 2026. Menards corprate I'm sure sees Wal-Mart's current price increase . Maybe they are just not looking to participate for whatever reasons until they are forced to repurchase at higher prices from the distributer when available.

Around me, the HD, Lowe’s, and Rural King were already higher than Walmart.
