Ouch.Meanwhile I'm on a hiring committee at the University where I work that is trying to fill a staff administrative position, bachelor's required, starting at $40,000.![]()
I would have to agree here. Heck, the can get fined for being too early.Yes, alot of time unpaid, criminal...talk about an industry in need of a union this is front and center.
I have a friend who makes 80k a year hauling steel. He’s up early, but is home every evening too.Truck driving is not the best job, but it can be a decent career if they work for a good company.
My high school was a bit different. It was just a regular large high school supporting 3 towns, but I was in the optional agriculture program that some of the students enrolled in that offered mechanics, horticulture, forestry, etc. A majority of the high school was not centered around this program.I'm curious, did your high school offer technological studies? Examples would be auto mechanics, wood working, hospitality/tourism and horticulture.
That's unfortunate, because degrees are not always the golden ticket and we can't all be doctors and lawyers. My high school was a bit different. Nothing is cheap about or in Ct ,I live hereYea, I think CT has a high cost of living compared to the national average.
I have also heard the same, that there is not a shortage of truckers.I would have to agree here. Heck, the can get fined for being too early.
I’ve heard there isn’t so much a shortage. Just too many bottle necking regulations.

More or less is his own boss and works on his own schedule. Owns his own truck.
He’s close to retirement and likely doesn’t care. I’m just concerned about the future of steel production in the US.
The same could be said for many $80-$120k/yr white-collar office jobs that are not in a high-demand field, especially if the person does not hold an advanced degree from a Top University. If you pay me enough I will drive for a short term gig. I'm sure you can hire enough people from McD to drive your truck if you pay them enough, both are dead end jobs anyways.
If your friend is netting 80k he’s doing very well, if he’s grossing 80k and with the costs involved in owning his own truck he more than likely qualifies for food stamps and welfare.I have a friend who makes 80k a year hauling steel. He’s up early, but is home every evening too.

My brother-in-law works for Publix, he is a store manager by now; his first job is at Publix too, he is 27 now; Recently bought the house on his own at @350KI have an uncle that was a truck driver for Publix Supermarket for 30 years and retired a 401K millionaire with his regular 401K and employee stock ownership plan (ESOP).

you cannot compare Publix to Walmart; Publix treats its employees second to none
plus, Publix jobs are a recession prone jobs generally no matter what
I was going to say….No one wants to be a long haul driver because it sucks ass. No one is afraid of self driving technology. lol. If you made 100k driving working for walmart, that would equate to about $18 an hour. It ain't no 9 to 5.
The only time you're getting paid to not drive is when you're getting paid detention time.I was going to say….
Sedentary job, more so than most desk jobs.
If you have to stay away from home overnight, is that compensated, is that part of the $110k? Maybe that’s ok for some twenty something but not if you want a family.
Then you’re pretty tied to eating out most meals, no? Does Walmart provide a meals compensation on top of the $110k? Two to three meals out most days adds up.
I get it that not all jobs are long haul overnight work, but it’s still sedentary.
