Old mower batteries etc are usable for core charges at WM. If you get the right person. I've done it several times on marine and vehicle batteries where I wanted to keep the old battery. I've also used 15 year old marine batteries as core charges for car batteries.

So that manager has or gives the return desk a battery tester.
To me, sounds more like the Walmart rep was getting confused between what a core charge is and a pro-rated refund.

You unfortunately ran into someone who didnt have a clue about core charges with batteries. Testing isnt part of the process for a core battery unless you were attempting a warranty claim which you clearly were not.
I often bring in mis matched battery types, in fact I usually hang on to a dead one as a core and havent had an issue.
I went to buy some PP at Walmart and it was cheaper online than in store. The website clearly states they will price match but the store wouldn't so I walked out. Came back when I had time, got the oil, went to CS who then again told me they don't price match. I showed them the website. They spoke to the manager who gave approval, but they told me that the manager tells them not to unless a customer complains. Go figure. I guess individual stores can make their own policies; or at least they think they can.
I don't have a screenshot of it but that wasn't there when I showed it to them. And their price match was not for another retailer but their own company.
You’re better off just buying it online & picking it up in store-or see if AMZN is price matching WM (they usually are). I had this core return problem with Lowe’s myself-bought a new SLA for my JNC-660 jump box, had aHard time getting them to take the core off my online purchase.
I couldn't do the online order if I wanted to get the Pennzoil rebate.
Do they still have that? On the batteries I bought this past weekend they had a full replacement warranty. That's why I got them there rather than Costco.

Not at my store. Clerk asked me CCA of old battery and hooked up a tester. It was a professional grade unit. It showed the battery was ok.
The clerk was the senior person at the return counter. She knew the difference between a warranty claim and a new battery purchase. The store manager explained policy to me same way clerk did.

The core charge has absolutely nothing at all to do with how it tests. You're returning it for proper disposal and the core charge/return is to encourage it. You could be returning a 10 day old battery or a 10 year old one, it doesn't matter. You just want your $12 back.

I bet head office would like to hear about that, they strongly frown on stores trying to pull crap like that.
I reported a walmart store to head office, and the store manager personally called to apologize within 3 hours, and I was sent a $500 giftcard.
I returned a battery core a month ago. Stood in the generic return line and was then told to take it to the auto area to get my core $$ back
Where do you find that store ? I have never seen a WM without a tire part. All the ones here do tires and what not. Seems silly to waste $20+ in gas to return a $12 core .
Exactly. I've never had a core tested at WM or anywhere else. I think confused is the key word.
My local does not have tire/lube shop.
I could direct you to a couple but I suspect you wouldn't be keen on coming to them for battery returns or warranty swaps.
