Walmart just put 20W50 into my wife's 1998 Blazer. She obviously didn't request this weight of oil. I was thinking of making them change it 10W30. IS there any harm in leaving it? Any thoughts?

Sounds too thick to me. How many miles on the Blazer? How cold does it get down there in TN in the winter? Will this oil be in the sump all winter, or do you rack up enough miles quickly that it will need to be changed prior to the coldest part of the winter? Could the "20W-50" reference have been a typo on her receipt? Might want to contact that Walmart and speak with a service rep.

The Blazer has 110K and it can get (and stay) in the teens for days on end. I've called Walmart and they said that's what they put in. They think the counter guy wrote the order wrong and the service guy just did what the ticket said. The vehicle is driven everyday for short drives from home (school, store, etc).

It will not hurt anything so long as it does not get too cold their in TN. I would not want 20W50 in my engine with winter right around the corner. If it gets down to the 30°F area you might find it hard to start. GM engines do just fine with 20W50 so long as the temps. are right. When it gets really cold though GM engines are notorius for spinning bearing with thick oil in them! GM's Performance Parts Motor's list 20W50 as prefered oil seeing how these engines are not certifed for cafe and were never put into any production vechile.

I would make them change it to what ever your prefference is like 10W30,10W40, 5W30,5W40 etc.....

I'd personally run it in there for a little while, just to see how the engine behaved. Thers no sense in dumping good oil. On that same token , I've never heard of a quik lube type place even stocking a 20w50, but again I'm from the northeast

Wal-Mart will change the oil from either bulk drums of 5w30 to 10w30 or any brand or weight they have on the retail shelf as requested by the customer. In this case, Wal-Mart screwed up.

wow what a retard, If i look at the work order and the weight differs then whats on the oil cap or vehicle's underhood sticker i go up and ask questions.

Most peopel do not read their owners manuals and few oil change places or garages follow the cap recomendations as well. You definatly do not want 20W50 in their if it is going to get into the teens temp. wise. Take it back and get a thinner viscosity like 10W30.
