I was in WM today back by the oil section and ran into a guy pulling a 5 qt. jug of M1 5-30 off the shelf. We started talking oil and M1 use, and he told me his 02 Dodge truck(5.something) had lifter clatter for some time. His Chrysler mechanic told him his engine had some sludge build up and was causing the clatter. The mechanic told him their cure for that problem was start using synthetic oil, so he did. This was three years ago and the lifters are quite now after several OCIs with the M1. I thought this was interesting, and shows the cleaning ability of synt. oil.

Good story! I try really hard not to talk to anybody in the oil aisles. Generally I walk away mad because the other person was making my head hurt.

Sadly, +1.

Things I have heard in the oil aisle in the last year:

Pennzoil is junk.
Mobil is the only "real" synthetic.
Mobil is not a real synthetic.
My daughter is having my baby. (yes, this one is real. Happened at Wal-Mart in Oswego, IL. Sigh.)
Castrol is the only oil that is fit for use.
Fram OCOD are the best all-around filter.

How about the scenario where a husband/wife team amble down Wally's oil aisle, study the shelves intently, and the wife suddenly shouts "there's some 5 weight stuff" and the husband grabs a jug (or a few quarts)without any consideration whatever of brand, specs, viscosity range, conventional or synthetic, etc.

Is that informed buying or what?

They must have gotten advice on here..... "any major brand will do with your application".... "you're car will run fine on "5-x or 5-y"... not that the opinions of everyone are worthless, because they're usually pretty informative, but they probably didn't make a bad choice. After all, weight is most important, right?

While at Walmart, I overheard an older couple say that they came from Autozone and the guy there told them to go to WM to get cheaper oil. Good idea, right? Here's the kicker, he also told them to stay away from Pennzoil because "they put something new in the oil and it wasn't any good." After awhile they settled on a jug of Quaker State.

It probably happens a lot.

I try really hard not to talk to anyone because you never know how strongly people feel about their oil.

I remember seeing a guy with a jug of cheap conventional oil and a large bottle of Lucas Oil Stabilizer and i just wondered why those 2 products together and wanted to ask him what it was going in. Why not just buy a quality oil to begin with!?

A few times i have seen 2 women at a time shopping by what color the plastic is of the oil container.

Anyone have any good stories about something that happened at the oil aisle?

I once had a woman ask me which oil I thought her car should use. I asked her what kind of car, she said Jeep Cherokee. I asked her what year and she said 1998. I told her either 5w30 or 10w30 but 10w30 sounds safer for that kind of car. She told me 10w30 sounds like what she thought, bought the oil and went happily along her way. It was PYB btw. That part she did on her own =)

Just last night in thw Wal-Mart oil aisle, a couple was looking at oil filters. After a short discussion in which the woman said "this one is cheapest" and the man said "they're all the same thing."

Funny thing is, they didn't even know for sure which filter they needed -- the book was right there -- and they didn't use it . . . they just guessed, as evidenced by the man saying "I don't remember for sure, I think it was a 16," and never referencing the book.

They left with a plain old orange Fram PH16

I used to have a customer that insisted on having us use straight 30 in his (then) new '94 C1500. He insisted any other weight would kill his engine immediately.

I also had to special order bias ply tires for him. He found out his tires were radials and had a fit. (one of the mechanics got a nice set of Uniroyal take-offs)

I wonder what happened when he found out the headlights were capsules? He probably made them change out the whole grill for a W/T 1500.

He is probably roaming the aisles of WalMart today.

Yep, this modified version sounds like what I may hear at my Walmart!!!!

I feel for you. The other day, a guy was buying five litres of GTX at $4/litre, all while complaining the four litre jug of GTX at $9.88 was too expensive. I didn't even know where to begin.

absolutely!

I have actually not as yet heard this at wal mart. Today there was a woman looing for an oil filter, and I recommended that she get anything but a FRAM.

The TLE aguys didn't look at me strange or make any comments when I asked if they had anything in a 0W-20. One of the girls says "Just Mobil 1". I thanked her and went on my way to grab some PU

I did my good deed at Walmart a couple of weeks ago. An older fellow in wheelchair was looking at oil filters and I asked him if I could help as the filter look up computer was not at a convenient height for him. He said he had a 70's model Ford PU with the inline six. I gave him the Fram/ST part number and he grabbed the orange Fram. I told him that I recommended the Motorcraft FL-1A for 20 cents more. I didn't go into the details as to why, I just told him the FL-1A was made to Ford specifications and was a better filter. That was good enough for him.

Funny, I try not to recommend brands, instead say to do this, just pick a colour jug you like or the brand your grandpa used.
