On another forum someone said they won't be put online, at least not for now. You'll have to go to the auto counter at Walmart to see the catalog and prices.

Here's what was posted about this on Garage Journal (emphasis added by me):

Hello: I joined because I wanted to comment on this. I work as a TECH at the walmart in Minot, ND..

I just want to clarify something here/

The system works in a way that you can choose your car, make, model, year, engine size etc. Then you can look at whatever parts you need.

Fyi i recently have been buying a few parts for my car... just as a reference. I bought tie rod ends from MOOG... $18 per side. They offer all the national brands. MOOG, MEVOTECH,ACDELCO, MOTORCRAFT, you name it .

The prices are very reasonable. It safe to say that I'll probably be using this new feature much more in the future. Depending on when you order the parts and where they come from. they could be there same day within 4 hours up to the next day AM. Very handy system to look up parts. The parts can only be ordered at the desk, not on walmart.com. Hope that helps. Any questions, go to your local walmart that has a TLE and ask to speak to a tech or the shop manager and they could assist with finding your parts for you.

It sounds like there could be a couple advantages...namely, a large brand selection with quick turnaround. Rock Auto has the selection, but you wait 3+ days for the parts. Most parts stores can get most things in their catalogs in a day or two if they don't have it on the shelf, but selection is often limited to 2-3 brands.

I think the key to this being successful will be to make it as self-serve as possible. I'd like to go into the store, go to a computerized kiosk, look up what I need myself and get a receipt or pick up slip, then leave. The deal killer for me would be having to find someone to look up the stuff for me (because surely they won't have someone available for this when they can't even staff enough registers), and then spend 20 minutes stumbling through the order process because "dis ain't my department, I don't know nuffin' 'bout dis mess, um, maybe if you go look fo someone dey help you."

LOL! Maybe they will just build some apartment complexes right by the store for the "associates" to live in....just like they do in China.

Nothing new.... you used to be able to buy house kits from the Sears & Roebuck catalogs.

I guess my expectations are low...

I find that people in independently owned part store chains really do the research if you ask them to. It is almost the complete opposite of going to Advance Auto or AutoZone.

I agree. I like the local shops, unfortunately they are all gone now, either taken over by Autozone, or turned over to NAPA (which isnt bad, same faces, slightly higher prices and some pushing of store brand).

Ive generally been happy with Moog, so I may give WM a try on pricing some parts for my pickup.

I will say, however, that I avoid shopping at AZ, AAP, etc. because of quality issues with their house-brand parts. I order from Rock Auto mostly.

If Wal-Mart can sell name-brand parts and undercut Rock Auto, then they just may get some of my business. Rock Auto's habit of shipping five different parts from five different warehouses is getting old.

I cant stress this enough. I have done some tests by adding a bunch of different products to my RockAuto cart. I noticed that the shipping location would change depending on what other items I had to maximize the shipping costs.

Rock auto knows their stuff can be expensive to ship, that's why they have a "choose for me" button.

They aren't going to guarantee the lowest price as that would cut into their overhead. They're happy being that way "often."

That works for BITOGers. Most people don't know the displacement of their car's engine, let alone other important info.

Those people probably don't work on their cars, and thus wouldn't be buying parts anyways.

Why not? In the 50s I remember when you could buy cars, houses, and complete rebuild kits for an engine overhaul, all from Sears. Dad ordered all his overhaul kit from Sears in 1959 for a Chevy 6 cyl pickup. We pulled the engine under an oak tree limb using a chain fall which hangs from a heavy support in my garage to this day.

You would be surprised.

Getting past "make" and "model" with most people is doing pretty good.
