My mom is looking between these two cars, they are fairly around 2008-10, since she wants used. Have any of you guys had issues with them, what did you like or not like about them. I don't know the engine size she is after but she does want a towing package, so how would these cars fair with a 1300 ibs. trailer?

I would think that either of those could pull 1300 lbs.

The Touraeg gives you a lot more engine choices, however, so if you needed to do some serious pulling you could go for the V8.

The RX is a longer-lived platform and may have more common/available parts.

Personally Id go after an RX hybriod to get 28 MPG city as opposed to 16 on either...

Good point, but the Touareg has been around a long time too. It uses the "common" VW motors that should also have plenty of parts. It's also available with a diesel, something Lexus doesn't have.

I'd buy the RX even for a significant premium. The advantages the VW has like better handling, less common and/or euro interior aren't as important to me as the better reliability of the Lexus. But that's a personal choice. RX shares platform and drivetrain with the Highlander, parts will never be a problem and it's reliable due to the large volumes they were designed to be sold in. The 3.5 is a great engine, only real issue was a rubber oil line which wouldn't be an issue in the 08+'s you are considering.

The RX can tow 1500lbs no problem, I'm sure the VW can too.

FWIW our Highlander is the least fun to drive car I've ever had, but one of the best. I'm not sure I could ever own a non-hatchback car again. The amount of stuff you can cram in is amazing. It's only been 104,000 miles but no stops at a mechanic yet.

My cousin owned the V6 Touareg and it had no problem towing a 4000 lb tractor/trailer combination with no trailer brakes.

That said, I highly suspect the RX will have lower long term ownership costs.

The RX is the way to go. But of course I'm biased! There's a reason though why the RX350 is the best selling luxury crossover.

It will easily pull 1300 lbs.
