Well I'm now driving my aunt's 2004 VW TDI Beetle with 158k. It's had 10k mile OCI at the dealer it's entire life (1 or 2 at 11k-12k miles). My daily driving is not short tripped and I probably do 12k-15k a year. This last oil change was about 7,300 miles ago and the dealer actually put in 5w30 507.00 spec oil.

The owners manual calls for 5w40 but allows for 5w30, but some of these engines have had issues on 5w30 so I'd like to change it with a 40 weight.

It also calls for 505.01 spec oil which to my knowledge 507 is able to be used (correct me if I'm wrong)

At BAP Import Parts they're the only place I've been able to find a 505.01 oil and it was Pentosin Full Synthetic. I've also heard Motul makes a good oil but I'm not sure where to find it.

Any thoughts? Motul or Pentosin?

Thanks

Neither. You're out of warranty so why not use something like Rotella T6 5w40 and run it out to 10,000 miles.

So with all of the cam failures in the 1.9L TDI from people not using the correct oil I should try to use an oil not specced for the car just to save a couple bucks?

How about M1 0w-40? It seems to meet just about every euro oil requirement, and it's readily available.

Mobil delvac1 le5w30 if you are bent on 5w30.it meet or exceed any requirement big rig manufacturer came up with.yes including german mercedes benz

Unless it has a 229.51 certification, it does not meet current MB specs.

Delvac does not have 229.51 cert. (It has 228.51)

Do you have proof the incorrect oil causes cam wear? I'm genuinly intereted.

It s more like the correct oil that causes issues. Try rotella t6 or Mobile TDT in there. It'll be great!

When my wife had an '05 Beetle TDi, I was all over TDIclub.com all the time. Plenty of the cam failures with the Pumpe Duese engines in the US happened to owners who religiously used 505.01, and it seemed to be the 5W30 flavors. The original 505.01 oil for those engines was Castrol TXT 5W40. Then that was abandoned and all the dealers started using Castrol SLX Professional OE 5W30 505.01. I used a 507 oil only once, Mobil 1 ESP 5W30, and it returned a less than stellar analysis from Blackstone. After that I went to Mobil 1 Turbo Diesel Truck 5W40 and then Rotella T6 5W40. The engine ran quiet and strong on both but Rotella T6 cost a little less. Sold the car to another enthusiast on TDIClub.com after my wife died in 2012, I think it had around 105,000 on it. It had just had the big service done that included timing belt and water pump, etc. That car absolutely slayed the MPG's. Typically averaged 40 - 42 around town and 46 - 49 on the interstate. Was the 5-speed manual transmission.

That's a 500,000 mile engine if you maintain it.

+1 I just sold a 03 Jetta, and my son has a 02 Beetle TDI, we've been running both with Rotella T6 5w40 with 7.5K OCI's.

Yep. Check for sludge too. 7,500 was the limit of my comfort zone when I was maintaining a Jetta. Any of the 5w-40 HDEOs will serve you well. I used Rotella T6.

Delvac LE in any weight does not have the 229.51 spec to be more specific in my reply.

Link to the 5W-40 spec.

One friend does 10K OCIs on his TDI(200K) with T6 5-40 and did have a turbo fail recently. Deposites caused oil starvation, he said. Another uses M1 TDT 5-40 at 10K OCI(220K) and his engine is still goin strong. Both drive a lot of hyw miles every day. That's why they bought the TDIs.
