I am driving a 1990 VW Jetta with 168,000 miles on the clock and a 5 speed manual trans. On cold mornings (10 to 40F) it is quite a struggle to shift into 1st and 2nd gear. After driving awhile, shifting becomes much easier. I would like to experiment with perhaps a synthetic gear oil. As the VW owners manual is a bit light on specifics, what would be a good choice of fluid and how many quarts would I need? Only info I could find is SAE 80, GL4 non-synthetic or 75W90 G50 synthetic.
