VW ID.4 reservations at 40k+

Cliffs notes.

- ID.4 has become one of VWoA hottest models.
- Production constraints (waitlist) should be eased once Chattanooga, TN starts building. TN models batteries to be sourced from new SK battery plant in Commerce, GA.
- VW dealerships receiving large subsidies from VWoA for training, development and infrastructure to support EV's (charging stations, etc.).

Seems VW is all in on the EV game and getting ahead of the curve of the mainstream automakers. Have not followed Nissan too closely but looking from the outside it seemed like the Leaf was/is more of a pet project without much support to the dealerships from the mothership.

Nobody takes VW seriously.
I personally don't know anybody that would buy one.
The conquest sales of the ID.4 are beyond what VW anticipated - can't remember the stats but a large majority of them are coming from another brand.

Also yes people do take VW seriously like they would Mazda or Subaru. Smaller but relevant players.

Tesla is slaughtering VW in Europe with 113K model 3 sold to 63K ID4's.

This is not a good comparison. Compare VW group electric sales versus Tesla sales. VW has many more different models to choose from, Audis, Skoda and VW. The real numbers are below:
Finally, here are the top automotive groups by plug-in electric car sales volume in Europe:

  1. Volkswagen Group - 25% share (Volkswagen brand - 11%)
  2. Stellantis - 13% share
  3. Daimler - 10% share (Mercedes-Benz brand at 9%)
  4. BMW Group - 10% share (BMW brand at 8%)
  5. Hyundai Motor Group - 10%
Tesla noted 7% share so far this year.

Why not?

Are dissimilar offerings really a better comparison?

The auto industry doesnt do it like that, but measure performance in segments.

The looking at the segments tesla slays.

Are you saying a sedan model 3 competes against a crossover id4?

IF you call them both EV's and consider that a segment - and ask "what is the best selling EV in europe" its the tesla model 3.

or if you are addressing a claim that a certain car will destroy another in the market place which people did.

Remember this - "The ID4 is going to kill tesla" - it didnt.

Volkswagen sold 121,000 cars in April 2021. They crushed Tesla in car sales in one month alone.ant

Ford sell more F150s than tesla does EV's. Neither is a very meaningful comparison though.

The proper comparison in this case would be the Model Y though, as both are EV CUV's.
More accurate for sure. Well see how those two square off in their first full years.

They are the largest auto maker in the world, so somebody takes them seriously. While they may no be as popular in the US we are not the center of the world. VW is extremely popular in Mexico and the rest of Latin America, Europe, and Asia.
