I purchased a gallon VW G12 coolant at my local VW dealer today. Here are a couple of pictures of what $22.95 + tax buys at the VW dealer.

VW G12 is what BASF calls G30 Glysantin. It's one of three DexCool type coolants:

G 30 - New generation of coolants for VW

G 33 - Approved by Peugeot, Citroen

G 34 - Approved by Opel/GM Europe, Saab

All three are mono ethylene glycol with inhibitors and the differences between them chemically are so small that you can't get a piece of paper between them.

The DexCool coolant sold in the U.S. for GM cars is compatible and cheaper.

I'm not 100% sure that Dexcool is compatible with G12. It's been debated on VW boards for years.

I do know that Pentosin sells "generic" G12, and it IS the same as the VW dealer juice.

Is Glysantin G 30 the same as VW G 12 Plus (purple)?

Mickey_M:
They appear to be the same chemically.

How can VW G12 and Glysantine 30 be essentially the same? VW G12 must not be mixed with VW G11, while VW G12 Plus can be mixed with VW G12 or VW G11.

G34 is the only one that carries the dex cool GM approval (GM6644M or something like that). Not sure if it matters though...

from the BASF website, http://www.basf.de:

GLYSANTIN ® G 30 (VW)

Reserve alkalinity of 10 ml, ASTM D 1121, 8-11

Density, 20 °C, DIN 51 757 procedure 4, 1.122-1.125

pH-value, ASTM D 1287, 8.2-8.6

GLYSANTIN ® G 33 (Peugeot, Citroen)

Reserve alkalinity of 10 ml, ASTM D 1121, 12-14

Density, 20 °C, DIN 51 757 procedure 4, 1.135-1.145

pH-value 50 vol%, ASTM D 1287 7, 6-8.0

GLYSANTIN ® G 34 (GM)

Reserve alkalinity of 10 ml, ASTM D 1121, 3.5-5.5

Density, 20 °C, DIN 51 757 procedure 4, 1.11-1.12

pH-value, ASTM D 1287, 8.4 - 9.0

So the GM spec G 34 appears to be in the same ball park, but with lower reserve alkalinity.

All those "G" coolants...what a goatrope!

I do like how they include easy to follow directions for flushing the system with water.
