Because everything you contribute on the form is relevantI mean it’s a marketing agreement and devoid of any technical relevance. If true, all it means is somebody paid someone more money than someone else.

That’s because dealers were using regular dino oil in the early MK4’s that had a new 10K OCI. They weren’t using the proper 502 spec synthetic.Who else remembers all the VAG engine oil sludging issues 20 years ago? We've come so far!

The reason was that VW North America wanted to lower the cost for drivers. In Europe, they used VW 502.00. In US they used, well, whatever. However, even regular synthetics did not do well.Yup. Same issue with Volvo's at the time. Conventional oil + turbo = clogged PCV systems.
"But we used Castrol!!!"
There are different flavors of Castrol, same like different flavors of Mobil1.When I bought my Jetta, I was told to only use Castrol 5w-40 oil that met the VW 505.01 specification. I looked at the bottle and it clearly said it was a synthetic blend. So, from 10k to 100k miles I used Motul Specific 5w-40 that met the 505.01 specification. It was a Group III oil. After 100k, I have used Mobil 1 TDT only. I have religiously changed the oil every 5,000 miles. At over 340k miles now, I think the record says I have been doing it right.
My model of PD TDI is notorious for wearing out the cam. Mine is still original. My opinion is the low grade Castrol oil and 10,000 mile oil changes were the problem. There is no chance I will use Castrol in any of my ICE cars.
In 2005 Castrol 505.01 was NOT a synthetic, only a synthetic blend. It said so right on the bottle. It may have been different in Europe. The Motul Specific I used came from France. I paid extra for a better oil. There are different flavors of Castrol, same like different flavors of Mobil1.
0W30 Edge is IMO still best Euro oil for gassers.
VW505.01 was always synthetic oil. How Castrol advertised it, is marketing thing. I had 1.9tdi PD vehicles in Europe, and they generally did exceptional on any VW505.01 5W40 oil, including Castrol.
Ok. They must had confused VW505.01 approval requirements and printed it for no reason. In 2005 Castrol 505.01 was NOT a synthetic, only a synthetic blend. It said so right on the bottle. It may have been different in Europe. The Motul Specific I used came from France. I paid extra for a better oil.
Interesting. I took Wife's Golf R in for a recall and tires, and the Service Advisor called me and suggested "BG brake treatment"...the answer was a firm "no". I dint even ask what it was and I will bleed the brakes myself or use an indy thanks.Coolant flush. They are trying to pitch it at every service that requires coolant drain.
I know people were complaining left and right that is clogging after that service. So, there was recall on water pump and tried to sell me that. I said: I don’t want my heater core to clog, so make sure they only fill it with coolant and nothing else. Service manager said: Yeah, I know.
So, there is that.
Looks to be just a fluid service - really should do it every 2-3 years anyway, I bet that's all they were selling.Interesting. Is that what you think is happening? That’s cool I like that Mobil is giving Castrol some of the market and let them have the low bid.. I also don’t own an Audi or vw but like to be informative on all sorts of topics.
You're speaking of the "pink" banner A3/B4 API SL one, correct? If so, I agree it's a good un'.There are different flavors of Castrol, same like different flavors of Mobil1.

Edge 5W30 A3 is also SL. Pink one was previous version of 0W30. There is new version of 0W30 and it is also SL. Probably SP 5W40 additive package inside. You're speaking of the "pink" banner A3/B4 API SL one, correct? If so, I agree it's a good un'.
