VW / Audi reportedly changes oil supplier

Which BG product is that?
Coolant flush. They are trying to pitch it at every service that requires coolant drain.
I know people were complaining left and right that is clogging after that service. So, there was recall on water pump and tried to sell me that. I said: I don’t want my heater core to clog, so make sure they only fill it with coolant and nothing else. Service manager said: Yeah, I know.
So, there is that.

I like VW's, but I don't like that they plastered then impossible-to-find, expensive Castrol Edge Professional all over the engine bay of my 2017 vehicle, and wrote the owners manual in a way that made it seem as though nothing else was acceptable, then changed their branding recommendation/quasi-requirement. I also thing that they have a few too many standards. I don't mind marketing, but they kind of play customers as fools in this regard.

So it’s kind of saying, oil is oil, no matter the manufacture,we will go with the availability and cheapest, and that is the cheapest

No, it is saying that VW lists an approval and that’s what matters. Not a marketing agreement that has nothing to do with performance as dictated by the approval.

Approvals are real-world proof of performance independent from the brand.

Your VW should have approval as requirement. Castrol Professional is not required. It is marketing.

Can you share an example of this?

I think that many (most) vehicle brands will try to steer you towards a specific brand of oil, but after you read between the lines it's evident what they are trying to do.

Marketing can be powerful, that might explain why a blender will pay for the privilege.

Reviewers might start calling those engines more refined since they're likely to be a touch quieter than before. I recall Castrol making my engines the quietest sounding. Every time I ran Castrol 5/10w-30 in my old trucks before switching to 40 grade they were near silent at hot idle when others would make them a bit more audible. The least quiet was mobil super 5w-30 but I didn't think much of it since it wasn't clattery or anything. Hot oil pressure was about the same.
The 2.0T in our 2019 Q5 and 2018 A4 a very refined. You hardly know they are running while providing good HP. Probably the best 2.0T on the market today

When I worked for a Japanese OEM, I had friends at the engine plant, and they told me that the oil used was based, in large part, on price. No junk. That's a given. But price won the day.

I know it's not relevant to wear, performance, etc. but my 2.0T has always been quieter and smoothest on castrol 5w30 (the old high-zinc API SL version).

SL version is still available with updated additive pack. They are not old versions. They just have more phosphorus than XW30 API limits.
