Are you rating the car as "wretched" based on crash data, on on some other standard? Your earlier post makes it sound as though its the latter. I cannot dispute the crash data.

I liked the car for its rock solid reliability, easy maintenance and great availability of parts. 318,000 miles on the all-original drivetrain with no unusual expenditures is hardly "wretched", unless you consider a heater core at 210,000 miles and a fuel pump at 245,000 miles to be excessive. I also replaced the water pump, starter and alternator two times each, but those are all 10-minute jobs. The GM MPFI V6 may be crude but its simple and reliable. I also liked it because it was an attractive car that didn't look like everything else on the road, which was especially true of the imports in those days.

I don't think "wishful thinking" would have kept me behind the wheel of a VW for that many miles without a LOT more expensive issues and headaches.

Well, we have 265k on our 87 CGT. I've done the same accessory jobs you did, plus updated suspension parts. It amazes me you never had to do any suspension work, but the way that car drives...what's the point? I'm actually not surprised that it never occured to you though.

You never answered my question, "compared to what?". What other brands of cars did you drive extensively that the Beretta compares so favourably to?

Bottom line is I'd rather smack myself in the head with a hammer all day than log 300k riding on that thing. To each his own, but again, your decision is not based on direct comparisons, especially in safety and chassis dyanamics.

I didn't mention any suspension work because I wasn't going to post a detailed 13-year maintenance history. I too would rather get hit with a hammer than drive for any distance in a 300K car with all-original suspension components.

EDIT - Sorry for not answering you question earlier; I'll go back through my records and see what all I test drove back in 1990 before I bought this car. I hope I saved everything. I never thought anyone would second-guess my purchase over safety and chassis dynamics concerns - 19 years later.

Chevrolet Cavalier
January 2000

Dear Consumer:

Thank you for contacting the Center
for Auto Safety (CAS) about your Cavalier, Sunfire, Skyhawk, Firenza,
2000, Sunbird, or Cimarron (GM's J-Car). CAS has received numerous complaints
on sudden acceleration, peeling paint, excessive oil and/or coolant consumption,
poor engine performance, power steering loss, and transmission failure.
Introduced in 1982 with the Cavalier, Cimarron, Firenza, Skyhawk and Pontiac
2000, the J-car holds the distinction of being the only platform shared
across all five GM car divisions. GM dropped the Cimarron and Firenza
after the 1988 model year followed by the Skyhawk after 1989. In 1995,
the Sunbird became the Sunfire just as the 2000 became the Sunbird in
1985.

The reliability of GM's J-Cars is much
worse than average. In fact, their reliability has been so poor that all
but the 1995 Cavalier and Sunfire made Consumer
Reports' list of "Used Cars to Avoid" since 1988. The Car Book
lists steering, fuel system, and brakes as the three most common J-Car
complaints. Engine problems, including cracked heads, surge or racing,
leaking rear main oil seals, and piston knock, have also plagued these
vehicles.

GM's door-mounted "automatic" belt system
on pre-1995 vehicles cannot prevent ejection if the door opens while driving
or in a crash. CAS petitioned the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration
(NHTSA) to recall faulty "automatic" lap-shoulder belts and door
latches on 5.5 million 1987-90 GM vehicles including
the 1990 Cavalier, Sunbird. NHTSA denied CAS' petition. In 1992, more
than 50,000 1991 Cavaliers/Sunbirds were recalled for defective shoulder
belt guide loops.

Uncontrolled acceleration is
a notorious J-Car problem that has resulted in 5 recalls of more than
300,000 vehicles. GM sent bulletins to dealers acknowledging power
steering defects in 1982-88 J-Cars, secretly extended the P/S
warranty to 5 years/50,000 miles and paid for post-warranty repairs for
those owners who complain loudly. An expensive defect on 1985-92 J-Cars
is peeling paint. At CAS' request, GM agreed to pay for
complete repainting for paint peel and delamination through six years
and unlimited mileage but, in March 1995, GM cut this back to 5 years.

You'll find information on these and other J-Car defects
below and what you can do about them plus a
complaint box. Your information will help
us build a strong case against GM on the defects we know about and help
us spot new ones.

We need you to support the Center for Auto Safety in our
fight for consumer rights and against poorly designed and unsafe cars.

Every home should have this invaluable consumer guide.

.
That is also why Porsche does so well. Most are second or third cars that sit in the garage and are driven fewer than 10,000 miles per year.
I wouldn't want to admit my $100,000.00 car is broken.

Not to knock a particular brand as I see no reason to be brand loyal. For example if 97% of Yugos are extremely problematic and you got one of the 3% that was not problematic you would think Yugos are great cars.

You know many of those TSBs are for things that really aren't problems. Some manufacturers like to issue lots of TSBs for such mundane "problems" as what engines are to be used with 5W20 oil and what ones should stay with 5W30, and my favorite one, from Ford, about how it's a bad idea to use an SOS pad to clean the seat leather.

(I'd love to know what idiot necessitated that TSB).

Porsche had quality problems a few years ago.The Boxster engines would grenade. I think it was to do with the intermediate shaft. They have since redesigned the engine to eliminate it.

Audi Junkie,

Why is there a TSB for DECEMBER 2006 OnStar - Analog-Only Systems Information, on a 1997 Chevy Cavalier????

That TSB is for a newer version, after GM had 12 years to perfect this awesome machine.

This TSB is more applicable, from it's inception...

Have never heard of the acceleration problem with the J-body. I thought that was strictly an Audi problem. Aside from the power rack problem, I never had any of these problems. In fact, I still have the 2002 Cav which has never seen the shop other than maintenance. I see more old Cavaliers on the road than VW and Audi, probably due to parts cost.

AudiJunkie - your post on the Cavalier TSB's is misleading. Most of just informational and nothing to do with the car's reliability. You just posted them all to make it look bad and that is pathetic. While I am in no way saying that that model and year of GM car was stellar in anyway, but it sure isn't as bad as you tried to paint it.

I find myself agreeing with GMBoy.

Also, GM service bulletins are often for a good share of the fleet, not just one line of cars.
