Going to do an oil change soon for my 2002 VW Jetta 2.0L, car has 45,000 miles. Currently has Quaker State 10w30 in there. Doesn't really consume much oil, maybe added about 1/2 quart in the 5000 mile interval. Car gets driven mainly on weekends with a good amount of highway driving.

So this time I want to try something different, a heavy duty engine oil like Shell Rotella 10w30. I don't really care for VW specific oil in this engine, I don't see it really necessary. Any suggestions? Thanks.

Considering fuel and quality of the U.S oils, go with synthetic. You maybe can run Chevrolet on 10W30 but VW 2.0T you cannot.
Car has 45,000 miles. If it reaches 100000 compare state of your engine with engine that used VW 502.00 oil.

This is not the 2.0 turbo, its the old 2.0 normally aspirated engine in many 3rd and 4th generation VWs.

Even in the naturally aspirated engine I would use a quality oil like Mobil 1 0w40. Rotella isn't really that much cheaper compared to the higher quality of Mobil 1. Plus, Mobil 1 is on sale quite often.

Generally European engines are designed around heavier oils.
0W40 or 5W40 will work much better in that engine.

You got a 2-liter VW that doesn't burn oil so you're already ahead of the game. Try Rotella T6 instead of the 10-30, otherwise Mobil 1 0w40 would also be very good, but I don't think this engine is particularly picky.

I ran Shell Rotella T 5w-40 in our 2.0 at 10K interval with good results:

Ours consumed a bit more oil though...

This engine will perform just fine on "diesel" 10W30 or 5W40 if you want to stick with the "factory" weight. It's a primative engine by today's standards and in my opinion, VW spec oils aren't truly required. I alternate between Rotella T6 and Mobil 1 0W40 with my 2.0...I buy the Mobil 1 when Advance has it on sale. lol

Rotella 10W30 is a thick 30wt...almost a 40wt. Good stuff....I run it in my Jeep.

My wife's old 01 Beetle 2.0 burned oil big time, more than a quart every 1000 miles. Our 04 Jetta 2.0 barely burns a half quart in 5000 miles, so VW definitely got it right that one.
