VQ35 syn recomendations

Howdy, basically it says to use petroleum oils. I don't know if that started with the 2004 or 2003 model years. I questioned that in the past and some responders suggested it might have something to do with the type of seals used in the motor now. I asked at the service dept of the dealer where I purchased my car and they didn't know why the change in the language in the owner's manual but I can state that the motor in my Altima is quieter with dino oil.

Nissan does not recommend synthetic, but that's a very different statement from saying that you should not use synthetic! Many, many folks (including myself through two VQ and one KA engine) have used synthetic oils quite successfully.

I used M1 5w30 for 70K miles in one VQ without issue (3750 mi OCIs, though), and I'm doing 7500 mi OCIs in my second VQ and a KA with M1 5w30 and, more recently, GC. General consensus is that the VQs like thick 30-weights or thin 40-weights, which make GC and M1 0W-40 great options.

I fed my VQ several fills of Havoline dino 5w30 in its early miles. Then I switched to GC. My VQ is noticeably quieter and smoother on the GC than it was on the Havo dino.

Recently, I decided to try Auto-RX to see if it would have any effect. Since the car had GC with LC in the crancase, I called Frank Miller and discussed with him. He gave me some slightly adjusted instructions. Just Saturday, I added my "rinse phase" oil, this time trying 5w30 Mobil Clean 5000, a straight dino that Mobil says is 10.6 cSt at 100*C. Nothing awful, but the engine isn't as smooth or quiet as it was on GC. I can't say for sure if it's the dino vs. syn or if it's the thick 30 vs. thin 30 thing, but for whatever reason, the GC is working for me.

My owners manual for a 2005 Altima 3.5 says that Nissan recommends mineral oil.It does not say anything that you can't use synthetic. It also says you can use 10w40 above 0.

I have the QR25E engine in my 2002 Altima, and have been using M1 5w30 here in Southern Cali. The coldest I've seen it get here is 40F, but that's not common. I've decided to switch to 10w30. Any thoughts on that?

It's +2 deg F here this morning at 6:30 and when I started my 04 Altima 2.5 S for my wife the engine was very noisy as usual. Im using Havoline dine 5W30,(1500 miles into the OCI). The Purolator PP filters seem to work the fine for start up noise(ADBV), but the timing chain will rattle lightly apon mild exceleration(even anything under 30mph) for about 2 minutes even after the car has been running for 5-10 minutes in the drive way with the heat blasting. My wife refuses to get into a cold car and I don't blame her. This is the noisiest(until warmed up) engine that I have had since the old Chrysler 2.2/2.5
