Volvo XC70 oil burning question.

My wifes 2004 XC70 with the 2.5T has 70,000 miles on it and has German Castrol in it. It is burning 12 oz. in 5,000 OCI's. That is about 1/8th inch drop on the dip stick. Is this something to be concearned about or is there a fix for it? This is our 1st Volvo that we bought used at 45,000 miles. Thanks!

That's not even noticeable oil consumption, UNLESS its spiked up to that over a short period of time.

You're kidding, right?

12 oz/5K on a whiteblock turbo is about as low as it gets, at any mileage. I seriously wouldn't worry about it.

And to the posters who I'm sure are going to say 'clean your PCV valve', I'll simply say have fun!

1/8 inch is not really oil consumption. That would be considered pretty good. Even slight blow by on the turbo will account for that much.

I know these engines fairly well as I have two of them, but have nothing to suggest at this point. Just keep it changed every 5 to 7.5 K miles.

I would however, suggest you do some drain and fills of the trans oil. Get the JWS 3309 fluid at the Toyota dealer they call it T1V I believe.

And I will throw my two cents in to say it's not a PCV valve of sorts but an oil trap system that is kind of a pain to change out, but you can see for yourself on volvospeed.com or swedespeed.com

If you're burning less than a quart in 5k, that's pretty much insignificant, and certainly not of concern.

Are you serious? burning 12 oz. in 5,000 OCI's especially the 5,000 mile oil change intervals with syn oil.

My Maxima burned half a quart a week and the engine ran amazingly well.. That is absolutely nothing (broken record in this thread so far)

Good to know it is not a problem! Thanks guys! I did a transmission flush at the dealer at 50,000 miles and will do another at 75,000 miles(in 5,000 more miles). Transmission seems to shift good still but once in a while it will shift a tad hard going into 2nd. Not really hard but just a tad harder then normal. It has done this since we bought it at 46,000 miles. I also flushed all other fluids at 50,000.

Try to put 3-4 oz of MMO or Auto-Rx in the transmission the rest of the miles, before flushing it.
It would do some additional cleaning.

Did you drain/fill the "lifetime" driveline fluids? If not, I'd strongly suggest doing so given the condition of mine. There are no drain plugs, so they have to be sucked out with a Mityvac and then filled (or you can install drain plugs).

The fluids consist of a bevel/angle gear up front, a rear differential, and a Haldex unit in the middle. The front and rear use a 75W90 synthetic GL-5 fluid, the front specifies "extra low foaming". M1 synthetic 75W90 is suitable and readily available. The Hadlex unit take a proprietary fluid you can get from the Volvo dealer.

At 6 years old, I'd strongly suggest changing the Haldex filter as well.

I think we did all that too but I'll check my records. Not sure on the Haldex filter. Where exactly is this?

It's above the oil pump, with a stamped steel metal cover held down with 2 4mm allen bolts.
