I am a new poster here and I recently purchased a 2010 Volvo XC 60 with the 3.0 turbo motor. The owners manual calls for an A3/B4 oil spec. My question is, would a 0W40 with the later A5/B5 spec be acceptable or should I run a 0W30 with the A3/B4 spec? The manual shows a 0w40 is ok to run but I don't see where the A5/B5 spec is backward compatible with the A3/B4 spec and ACEA states that the newer A5/B5 oils may not be suitable for some engines.

A A5/B5 differs from and is not backward compatible with A3/B4.
You should stick to a A3/B4, whether xW30 or xW40.

A5/B5 does NOT replace A3/B3 B4.
My take: Go to Wal mart and get:
Castrol 0W40 ($22-27 for 5qt jug)
Mobil1 0W40 ($22-27 for 5qt jug)
or go to NAPA and get on sale
Valvoline 5W40 MST ($4.99 per quart on sale)
or
order on Amazon:
Castrol 0W30 A3/B3 ($46 for 6 quart)
Pennzoil Platinum 5W40. ($46 for 6 quart)

I am curious which 0w40 meets A5/B5?

Let's give him a break, he is not as familiar as rest of us about those specs. That is why he came here to ask for advice.

You read too much into my question. I was really wondering if someone has a 0w40 that is claiming A5/B5.

LOL, sorry man, sometimes written word can be interpreted wrongly.

I have not seen any 0W40 meeting A5. HTHS is between 2.9cp and 3.5cp.
Not sure meaning of that oil.
