Help choose oil for 2018 BMX X1

Mobil1 0W40 is one of the best oils out there. I used it on track, when ambient temperature was 101f.
Absolutely irrelevant what is ambient temperature when it comes to his choice.
And yes, at -20 0W will have better flow. CCS numbers don't just magically increase at -30c.
just answering OP's question (which doesn't mention Mobil 1 0w40) 🤷‍♂️

At -20 I would definitely run 0W. Regardless of brand. Especially if vehicle is parked outside.
CCS numbers will be better. Also, most 5W have cheaper base stocks. It is easier and cheaper to blend desired oil.

Maybe they will, maybe they won't. A 5w would be usable down to -35C.

I started 5W at -47. I started 10W at -42.
Usable is not same as starting every morning during winter at very cold temperatures. If one can get oil with better pumpability, why not? Especially oil that is better than vast majority of 5W oils (few exceptions like Pennzoil Platinum Euro 5w40).

Update: On the Mobil 1 Euro 0W40 I got poor highway gas mileage during the recent cold spell, my oil sump temp stayed around 65 Celsius (150F) when it was -20c outside (-4F). Normally I’d get 33-39mpg at 65mph but instead I was getting 28-35mpg. This is of course anecdotal as I don’t have precise measuring equipment, but it did stand out to me.

Now it’s time to change my oil, and I’m leaning toward something thinner than 0w40 even though warmer weather is coming. My local Walmart and Canadian Tire have nearly no euro 0W20 or 0W30 oils on the shelves, very frustrating.

Remind me why 0W40 is ok for this engine? The manual states 0W20 or 0W30 (LL01FE or LL14FE+).

Here’s what’s available to me right now:
-> “Castrol M” - 0W20 - LL17FE+ ($50CAD)
-> “Castrol A3/B4 - 0W30 - LL01 ($50)
-> “Castrol A3/B4” - 0W40 - LL01 (on sale $50)
-> “Castrol A3/B4” - 5W40 - LL01(on sale $40)
-> “Pennzoil Euro” - 5W40 - LL01 ($40)

I’m tempted to try Pennzoil but it’s a 40 weight, it’s a good price. I wish i had access to used oil analysis for various oils with this engine.

It is cold. If your engine cannot bring oil temperature to operating level at 65mph after some time, that is big part of the problem. Is thermostat OK? Your engine needs more time to warm up, transmission fluid, wheel bearings etc.
Castrol Edge 0W30 would be my first choice on that list, followed by Pennzoil Platinum Euro 5W40.

Oil temp at the filter was around 100C but the sump stayed pretty cold, maybe causing extra drag on the crank?… I don’t know for sure.

Regardless, thanks for the input. LL01 oil has me worried about calcium content causing LSPI, is that a valid concern in your opinion?

Looks ok to me. Sump temperature is derived from oil level sensor. Oil temperature is derived from oil pressure sensor.
It is cold. You will take a hit, especially if parked outside. If you have such mpg drop out of nowhere, it is not oil. It is something else.

If Mobil 1 0w40 was on the list, would that be your first choice over the Castrol?

I have a 2018 530e with the same motor. At 140k miles all she has seen was bmw 0w20 and burns 0 oil between 5k changes. Just had replaced the OFH both water pumps and thermostat.
Only thing left is a valve cover.

Pretty common maintenance by that mileage on a BMW.

Exactly keep things fresh and replace common failure points before it fails and it will serve you well. B48/58 are great motors probably up there at the top of the food chain today. They just need a little care like a beautiful woman.
