Volvo 5.7 - Amsoil 15w-40 ??

I just bought a 1999 Four Winns Vista 258 with a 5.7l V8 GM 350 powerplant.

The previous owner was apparently using volvo-pentas synthetic version of motor oil 15w40.

Since I can get Amsoil a lot easier, I wanted to use their synethetic "heavy duty" diesel 15w40 for my application but was worried about it thinning out or ash desposits and the like...

Any suggestions??? Will Amsoil be fine in the 5.7L engine

Go for it. It will be fine.

I stretched out a oci to 108hrs with it in our 454 and it still showed 7.3 for the tbn. It's an excellent choice for marine use in my opinion.

I use this oil in my ski boat with a 5.8L Ford. It's great. The only problem I had when I switched to Amsoil from Conventional oil is I had to turn the idle down. The motor seems to turn much easier.

Thanks guys. Im going to call my Amsoil Rep. after work today and order 2 gallons of the 15w40 synthetic heavy duty diesel oil for the boat.

Now what about gear oil for the Volvo Duo-prop outdrive?? I know it calls for "hi-vis" gear lube. Any recommendations on that?

My SX drive calls for synthetic GL5 75W-90. I'm pretty sure you need the same. The gear box and cone clutch are the same on the SX and dual prop. The lower ends are different, however. In the past, I've used the Amsoil 75W-90. This year I will use their Univeral Synthetic Marine Gear Lube here:

I use this oil in my Volvo Penta 5.0 in my 2000 Four Winns 190. Great Oil.
