Volkswagen spec'ed oil: ANY weight will work.

Which may in fact be the result of Castrol being very closely involved with VW during the development of the oil specs . VW Driver and Audi Driver , two very good British magazines ran a lengthy series of articles on the subject and mention was made of Castrol's close involvement with the variable change interval oils used in European VW/Audi cars .

Does the VW 502 spec include within it any viscosity requirements? I would assume it does. Not SAE viscosities, but ranges or minimums/maximums at particular temps (e.g., 40C and 100C) as well as HT/HS requirements?

If it does, then I doubt the SAE viscosities in the manual matter and they are probably just "good enough" recommendations catering to the laziness of most American car owners.

EDIT:

Here's the answer:

Straight out of the manual of my 2005 Audi S4:

API SJ, ACEA A2 or A3
Factory fill is 0w30; use 5w30 or 5w40 if it's not available.

There is zero mention of using VW 502/505. A few pages later it says you must change according to the intervals in the Maintenance booklet. The next paragraph says that under some circumstances you should change more often: short distance driving, dusty conditions, predominantly stop & go, or exposing the vehicle to below-freezing temps for extended periods.

They also specify a 600 mile break-in period. The first oil change happens at 5k, then every 10k after that. But the 10K OCI only applies to "normal driving conditions".

There is definitely an evolution in Audi -VW recommendations for NA. Hopefully we will see a move to a universal 5w30/ 504-507 like in Europe/Australia.
Meanwhile I do think there maybe something in Audi leaving out 0w30 for their DI engines..... maybe ; see page 2 , point 4 of the attached document.

I would like to know how a 5W30 can be recommended, but a 0W30 is not? (gas engines)

Not sure I understand this from above (felixthecat) download:

4. The SAE 5w30 is necessary for diesel vehicles with diesel particle filter (DPF), since the soot in the DPF has to be burned at certain intervals.
This is made possible by an increased amount of fuel injection. However through this also a clear engine oil thinning can appear which could lead to a critical area of the engine lubrication at a SAE 0W-30. The 5W viscosity takes care of the necessary safety of the engine lubrication.

That's pretty old. I think the one that the OP linked to in the original post is more recent.

it is.

There's nothing else to really say on the topic.
It is what it is.

Either you believe what VW/Audi say in black and white.

Or you try to read between the lines and makeup your own conclusion.

Does any 10w40 oil meet the VW spec called for your car???

The point is that while VW 504/507 is only available as a 5w30 oil (potentially for very good reasons),VW 502 oils are available in a range of viscosities and maybe some are more suitable than others for an engine that was developed to run a 5w30 oil originally.

The point is you can use whatever oil under the sun.

If you want to be kosher with the warranty, you can use ANY oil that meets the VW spec called for.

No, because there aren't any 10W-XX oils that meet VW 502

That's the oil company's claim. It's not on the VW or Audi list, is it?

There aren't any 10W-XX oils on any of the lists that VAG has put out, and the reason is that the spec includes low temp performance and flow requirements that a 10W-XX is unlikely to meet.

I'll admit it's possible (though unlikely) that the Motul product does meet the spec and was left off the "official" list for the U.S. market because it's not common - but then, I again find that unlikely given that 1) other Motul products are on the U.S. list, and 2) there is not a single 10W-XX oil from anyone on it.
