VOA Database

I appreciate this thread. Thank you.

In the HM oils section where 6 popular HM oils are compared... Did viscosity numbers come from manufacturers' data sheets or from VOA lab testing?

I ask because the cSt numbers look exactly the same as those quoted in the manufacturers' data sheets (if my memory serves).

Which lab did the testing? It was probably stated earlier, but I missed it.

Where it says "Measured cSt@100C" those results came from oil analysis. "Claimed Viscosity" is from the manufacturers' data sheets.

Oil Analyzers for all 6 oils.

Regarding KV100 cSt viscosity

In the OP HM oils section, for 5w30 Quaker State HM FS it says:
Tested 12
Claimed 11.7

Today I downloaded its data sheet from Quaker State's website here.

It's current data sheet claims 10.77.

That's a signifigant discrepancy. Any idea why? Is it a different oil? Perhaps a newer, thinner version of that oil?

As of August 2023, the numbers in my database are accurate. The datasheet you posted is dated 10/7/2024, so they've updated the formulation since my test.

I see. Well apparently the new formulation is thinner. 😮‍💨

I think I may have noticed a trend of oils being reformulated thinner and thinner over the years, including HM oils. Am I correct?

Is this an EPA related fuel economy thing?

However, the Quaker State HM FS is still one of the thicker 5w30 HM FS options available. I suspect QS is still the thickest by a slim margin over Valvoline EP HM.

I started this awhile back here: https://bobistheoilguy.com/forums/threads/collection-of-20-weight-api-sp-voas.342292/
and here: https://bobistheoilguy.com/forums/threads/collection-of-xw-30-api-sp-voas.343019/

My time no longer allows me to keep it updated the way I'd like. Plus, people were asking for a downloadable version anyway. So I had the idea to convert it to a Google Sheet that certain people could be given permission to edit/update, and everyone could view and download as a local spreadsheet. Thoughts? Suggestions? Anyone interested in helping keep it updated?

One thing I'd like done is for the VOA threads listed on this sheet to be chased down and linked to the sheet. Any volunteers would need to be familiar with editing Google Sheets, as it could be mucked up pretty quickly otherwise.

Here is a link to the sheet as it stands. I've included separate tabs for 20, 30 and 40 grades. It can be improved (info on certifications can be added if the oil is not API SP, SN+ or SN) and I'm sure there are a bunch of other great ideas you guys can come up with. Let this thread be a place of discussion. If there's enough interest and it becomes a solid single source of VOAs, the mods may decide to make a sticky thread for it. If not, it can die a slow death here. ;)

I want to say a big Thank You to Yku for all the hard work. And to Fantastic for his hard work on the HDEO database. Much appreciation for you both 😍😍
