I went to WM last night to buy some VML. When I saw the price increase I settled for PHM. VML used to be $16.47 for the (5) qt. container. It's now $17.97. PHM was $16.47 so I bought that. I also needed an extra qt. (6 qt. capacity) of PHM, which was $4.47.
Does the PHM have some of the GTL base like the PYB is suspected to have?

PYB is supposed to have some GTL base in it. I was wondering if the PHM might have some GTL base in it as well.

I happen to like the PHM better than VML due to the fact my engine is so much quieter. I know it doesn't mean a thing but I feel better not hearing all the racket.

Shell's MSDS for HM and PYB says it is composed of "highly refined mineral oil". The MSDS for synthetics and blends refers to "synthetic esters, polyolefins....". So, HM and PYB seem to have the same base stock and neither seem to have GTL. These MSDS documents are dated 2/14, so they should be current.

As far as additives go, looks to me like QS Defy & PHM have the most although it's somewhat different between the two. QS Defy has less than half the moly but twice the boron of PHM, and more-or-less vice-versa. The QS Defy has the most phosphorous and zinc of the brands tested as well. I just can't see it available in the 5 qt. jug at WM, at least not via walmart.com

My local WM just recently started carrying all of the QS oils. Before they only carried QSGB and DEFY. They are now carrying all of the M1 and MS5K oils, including syn-blends.
I also noticed they are thinning out some of the Purolator Classic oil filters.
