The oiling systems don't appear to have changed markedly including additional pressure control/relief and accumulators...

a 5W20 at 0C is 40 times as thick as at 100C...at -20C 200 times as thick

VVT's are basically pressure-operated hydraulic oil systems.
Its VVT engagement/disengagement is probably regulated by ECM/PCM basing on,among others, pressure sensor feedback, rather than use of oil viscoisty grades.

No they aren't. Literally the same system in the 5.7 that spec's 5w-20 is used in the 6.4L that spec's 0w-40.

They do however, use an oil pressure sensor to extrapolate viscosity based on oil temp and if it gets out of range, it can trigger a CEL. Former user Clevy was able to make his 5.7L do it on 0w-40 when it was -35C. Otherwise, it never came up.

2012 T&C here, I've run everything from Valvoline 5w20 to GC 0w30 to a "sort of" 10w30 Mobil blend, to Pennzoil SRT 0w40. No difference.

My work van with the TigerShark has had 0w20 to 5w40 in it. It does not care, not that one could tell from that pooch of a motor anyway.

I've gone a bit beyond that with VVT, it doesn't matter at all....or else the VVT was never working for 10 years and I didn't noticed.

20W-50 can be used in anything here.

2005 Tacoma 2.7L 2TR FE spec'd oil 5W30.

2018 Tacoma 2.7L 2TR FE spec'd oil 0W20.

I selected a tried and true engine, opting to stay away from GDI.

As many are saying, there appears to be flexibilty in useful viscosities in VVT engines..

Currently, my maintenance plan is to stick with Pennzoil Platinum 0w20 for quite a while.

M 1 0W40 may be subbed in after a few years.

JLTD, my source on the CRV recall is Consumer Reports, from a few days ago.
