Very Low NOACK in 0w20/30 oils

The Castrol Edge 0w30 A3/B4 that was recently discontinued (I got two OCI's worth at Pep Boys with a rebate promo, while I could still get it!) has a NOACK of 8.3 but it's a heavier 30, almost a 40. Here is the PDS. It's still sold in Canada, but not down here anymore.

I think PP/PUP also has a low NOACK, mostly due to the GTL they use. I wouldn't be surprised if the 0w20 number was well under 10 as well. Pennzoil/SOPUS is most likely your best hope for a low NOACK

The discontinued Pennzoil Ultra (PU) 0w-20 was the gold standard in low Noack scores. The value changed for the normal when it became PUP.

Lots of debate about whether the number was ever real.

Maybe future EPA compliant engine oils will be formulated to maintain their NOACK number (ASTM D-5800) much longer.

Oil basestocks have always improved even before the additive packages are added.

Here's a Mobil Blending guide...

and the datasheets for Spectrasyn 8, 6, and 4 in that order...

If you look at the base-stock make-up of the 0Ws, I honestly can't see how one could suggest that the volatility of these grades has any (significant) room to move on the better direction.

Shannow:
I have several quarts of Mobil 0w30 AFE picked up at the AZ CLEARANCE.
What do you think of a 75/25 mix of AFE 0w20/0w30? or even a 50/50 mix? (to use up the 0w30). Would mixing affect the OCI capability?

Sorry, missed the question...

What's your car call for ? 0W20 ?

Given that both are AFE, that fits into what most of the Oil Companies suggest, mixing within product ranges.

If your car is 0W20, and you are thickening AFE a little with 0W30 AFE, can't see any harm whatsoever.

I'd be using it in my 2014 Focus which spec's 5w20.

I have a bunch of various M1 quarts - and this chart could help liquidate them with caution ...(jug+1 plan etc)
Is the VM viscosity modifier ? If so - that 5w30 looks like a good TDI oil compared to 0w30 (I don't need 0w)

NOACK doesn't really mean much and there is no reason to worry too much about it. You won't see that much difference in oil consumption with lower NOACK, as API limit is more or less sufficient.

NOACK isn't about oil consumption, although that's the most visible symptom. Cumulative (over several oci) deposits in the combustion chamber can be controlled by lower NOACK.

Nope, NOACK doesn't tell you much about that. It has to do with base-oil quality and detergents.

If what you said was true, you would have no deposits with a synthetic 20W-50, which has very low NOACK. However, in reality, that's not the case. You may get even more deposits depending on detergents and base-oil quality.
