Veloster Turbo is now there....

- 3 door (2 on one side one on the drivers side) + hatch

- 1.6L turbo 201 HP 195TQ from 1750RPM

- 40mpgUS

- 0-60 6.2sec

Tons of after market available for these cars too. For a young man, budding family this seems to fit a niche. Hyundai is making efforts to address a lot of different markets out there, they are doing well for sales and quality so they are on to something.

Bah, get a real 4 cylinder sports car:

Just saw one for sale for $23k in mint condition.

Is anyone calling the Veloster a sports car? I mean, other than people who know absolutely nothing about cars.

It's a hot hatch.

I have a local guy around here who bought one of the N/A models and actually used the word "fast" in a lively discussion recently.

If you really believe it then it's true. For you anyway. Standard Velosters are anything BUT fast!

At least they have upped the ante a bit with a turbo. But even Hyundais newer Genesis models simply do not perform like their rated hp indicates they should.

Big surprise. Plus its FWD so unless you want to get a good arm work out your limited to the amount of HP you can screw out of it.

There is much more room in a veloster.

That, and the power delivery from a turbo 4 cylinder is more quick when compared to an NA 4 cylinder of similar displacement.

This. Driving a small turbo 4 tuned for midrange power feels like driving a torquey V6 once the turbo spools. Driving our Fit back to back with the Cruze, it's amazing how high the Fit needs to rev to make decent power. Normal acceleration in the Fit happens about 2500-4000 RPM while the Cruze typically accelerates at 1500-2500 RPM.

I sure hope Hyundai didn't neuter this engine like the one in the Elantra. That engine was gutless compared to the smaller turbo engine in the Cruze.

Don't get me wrong, I think the Veloster is cool looking, but Hyundai is lacking chassis and NVH tuning.

I haven't dissected the performance data on the Veloster, but a six speed car did 0-60 in 9.1 seconds N/A! That's a bit slow. It NEEDS a turbo for sure to keep up.

As an example of inflated hp ratings their new Genesis Type R 4 door sedan only traps 103 mph which simply does not compute to 429 hp! Not even close. Especially with that 8 speed trans.

Ahh, the poor Veloster.

Looks like a modern interpretation of the fondly remembered CRX-Si with a back seat and a supplemental door to actually access it.

Sounds great, right?

Except that it is motivated by an Accent powertrain. Hyundai says it is an "all new chassis" except it is littered with bits of Accent here and there.

The Accent is a decent economy car, but none of it's variants have ever been particularly sporting. Obvious answer is to turbocharge it. The problem I see with that is that it is going to be dangerously close to Genesis coupe price territory. With the tech package, The Veloster is already close to 274hp 2013 2.0T Base Gen Coupe price.

Of course you do get all the bells, whistles, and shiny electronic gee-gaws for that price. I think it will do quite well with the Gen Y and Gen Z set that believe it more important to have a good smart-phone than to have a car.
