I remember none of us liking the base Veloster when it came out and many wanted to see how the Turbo Veloster would do..
So it's been released :

still ***** and tacky, IMO:

I don't like the Veloster (or most cars like it), but I completely agree with this sentiment. You're not looking at the outside of the car when you're driving it. What should matter is how much you like how it works.

I can see what you mean, BUT still OTHER people will see it, and you WILL see it every time you approach to get in, and in this one you will never look back when you get OUT 'cause it's ugly

(IMO)... i do THAT when i get out of the 330Ci...'cause (to me) it looks great from outside and inside

I think the GTI looks better, and has matching (or better) performance...not to mention a more refined-looking interior to go with it. I hate the way most cars to their interiors these days - way too gimmicky and tacky.

From that side view, as a little 4dr hatch, I dont think it looks that bad. Not sure ive seen one from other angles, or in person though...

I think it's funny people are saying who cares how it looks.. You honestly don't care how the car looks? I could never drive a car I thought was super *****. I am still on the fence about the Veloster. The base model was so gutless it could barely get out of it's own way, but with some power it might be a decent car.

I am still not crazy about how most Hyundai's look with all this weird swoopy styling stuff, but it could grow on me if it's a half decent drive.

I'd be lying if I said I don't care about other people's opinions. I will say, however, that that would never be a factor in my buying decisions. It sounds like a recipe for constant worrying and wasted money.

As for how the car looks to me... Having owned two cars that looked pretty good (to me), I completely understand the walk-up and walk-away effects. That said, function becomes beauty to me. If I like functional aspects of an ugly car, I will eventually like how it looks; if I hate functional aspects of a gorgeous car, I will eventually think it's ugly.

Cases in point: I thought the Acura RSX looked like a bug that needed to be squashed, until I drove a Type-S; now I kind of like how it looks. On the other hand, I absolutely loved how the latest Mitsubishi Eclipse looked, until I found out that it's really heavy and has no AWD option; now I think it's butt-ugly.

Maybe that's just me.

So what you are saying is design excellence is it's own sort of beauty.

Anyone can look good on the surface, but it takes talent to look good beyond that.

Same goes for cars and other designed products.

similiar to the old WRX STIs with the goofy spoilers. Some people like it but I think it is DUMB.

That car is going to have a good segment of the market to work with as long as the price is right

I'm 36 in less than a month with 3 kids and just bought a Civic Si. So no, in the name of a decently speedy car, I wouldn't care. I mean, would you buy a Ferrari if it only made 100 hp just cause it's pretty?

No but I doubt people would choose Ferrari over a Porsche if the Ferrari looked like a Veloster.

if there were 2 cars with the same performance and 1 of them looked ***** and the other looked good, would you buy the ugly one?

I actually like the looks of it, and I think it looks better in person. That said, it simply wouldn't work for me as an 'only' car given my need to haul stuff/dogs around, and if I get a second car (which I probably will) it's gonna be an FT-86/BRZ. 200hp on a small FWD car? No thanks. If anything, I'd get the non-turbo version.

Truth is, this car is about as close to the CRX as any car I've seen. And as we all know, the CRX Si really was the perfect car!

As far as the styling it's obviously in the eye of the beholder. That said, this is the only Hyundai which doesn't appear to be looking like a different brand of car. I like it.

^ I think the same way BUT there are a lot of younger drivers who may not care about it being FWD and think that the BRZ looks "too normal" and although i didn't check too closely, the Veloster might have the edge in MPG?

IDK why that competition section didn't incl. the BRZ.

Then it would be about which one is cheaper. If they were the same price, then maybe styling...

well, I didn't mention it explicitly but what I meant was 'if all other criteria were similar (incl. price), and looks were the only deciding factor'

No, but if it's not the whole package, it sucks. Much like a 100HP Ferrari.
I do prefer powerful sleepers over sexy looking slow cars, but it's partially because I prefer subdued styling (which is probably why I don't like Hyundai's futuristic looking stuff)

All things being equal, yeah styling is a factor. I guess I'm just saying a car would have to be pretty ugly for me to avoid it if it hauls %#$ The Veloster is certainly unique looking. But ugly enough to steer me away if, say it made it to 60 in 5.5 (to use a ubiquitous measure)? Not at all... I'm betting it won't. But I'd love to be proved wrong...
