I changed the oil on my Ferris FW35 with the 28HP Vanguard EFI engine with the 5 quart Oil Guard remote sump today.

The mower has 145 hours on it and I got it new in 2018. I changed it at 7 hours originally with Mobil 1 15W-50. There are some small metallic pieces and some slivers in the filter media. I just used a drywall saw to cut it open to look at the media. Break in debris still?

What filter went back on? Thank You, looks pretty good I think 👍

Is this the 2nd OCI that was ran from 7 to 145 hours? If so, then the metal debris could certainly still be some break-in that was still going on between 7 hrs and ?? hrs.
Yep. The manual calls for 500 hour oil changes with this system but I’m not a commercial user and figured it was time to change more for peace of mind.

The same kind, it came in a Briggs box and has Vanguard embossed on the plastic part. There are some generic versions online but since I probably won’t change the oil for another 5+ years, I figured I can spend $30 on the OEM vs the $20 for the no-name.

If OEM filter is set-up for 500 hour oil changes, from the start, then the filter was probably fine for this 138 hours. It obviously shows the metal which is always interesting to see. I'd assume it's from the break-in period early on & at 7 hours of initial change. Nice looking cartridge filter on a walk behind mower.

Debris that large to see must be left over from machining. I just have a regular lawn mower with a Briggs, fairly new. It said the best oil is 5w-30 synthetic so I bought a quart bottle of their brand oil. Mower runs very well on it. It is not the specs of car engine oil.
Not topic but Im probably going to have to go self propelled battery mower, the engine does not start by two pullswhen unused for awhile. When hot it starts first pull. I can’t be pulling on a rope anymore. It does get to that sometimes, never thought it would. Pulled shoulder is no fun recovering from.
