Valvoline VO-54 Filter.

So, my friend's 2009 Fit had its last service done presumably at at a Valvoline Instant Oil Change (VIOC).

Under the hood, I found a VO-54 filter. According to Fram's cross-reference guide, this cross-references to a PH6607. This a filter normally used on Nissans.

Newer Hondas use a PH7317, and this car is no exception. So, the correct Valvoline filter should have been a VO-50.

The Valvoline shop said that the two are interchangeable (which they are), but I certainly would not install a smaller than recommended filter on a car.

The recommended oil change interval is usually around 10k per the OLM, and it has nearly 4k on there now. I can't imagine running a smaller than recommended filter on there to be a good thing, right?

So, is there any problem with using the VO-54 on this application?

I've run ST 6607 on my Civic before when it calls for 7317. When I use to take my car to Firestore for the oil change, they put on the "Firestone" brand that is the same as the 6607. There's never been a problem.

It is new, assuming it is pretty clean I would say not a big deal. Your friend can run it 10K OTOH I don't know if I'd trust 10k runs on what they put in assuming it is Valvoline conventional (or any oil they can save the most money on.) Synpower yes Valvoline conventional no. That is the bigger question. You should help him change his oil and filter

I had a similar situation with a Autozone OIl Change special it included a STP 6607 for my 07 Fit. It's a shorter filter so i used it for a 5000 oci . Would it hurt for a 10,000 oci probably not,but it turned me off to STP filters .

I've seen the stp 6607's and personally.. I don't understand the reason for even having a filter if that's the case!
But I always run the 7317 size assuming there's clearance.
I have no other reason except that to me more filtering is better.

In Purolator terms the 14612 and 14610 are pretty much interchangable. Your talking a small difference in oil volume between the two. Nissan for example, can't seem to decide which they want to use.

Though I'd prefer the larger filter, I don't think there's any issue using the smaller version for the full OCI.

fyi, Advance commercial accounts use a Puro made filter called ProMotive. I noticed that they only carried the shorter filter in some applications, the 7317 is one of them. Only carry the shorty. I suspect that's what happened at VIOC, SOP. I think the same goes for some PepBoys Proline filters.
