I'm getting ready to do my first oil change on my 2009 Subaru Impreza. This will be it's third oil change. I had the very first change done at the dealer. The dealer uses Valvoline dino 5w30. I have read a lot of people rave about PP. I haven't been able to find much on Synpower. What would you guys pick? WalMart sells Synpower 5qt jugs for $21 and PP jugs for $23. I'm leaning towards Valvoline since the car already has the conventional stuff in it.

I'd stay with the Valvoline dino in 5w-30.

My Subaru (2007 Outback) did not do as well with PP over Havoline DS.

I'm going to put in some Pennzoil 5w-30 YB and see how it does with it.

But so far, I like the Havoline Ds the best. (24k miles)

Take care and

PS: Subarus do fine with ANY SM oil for recommended OCIs. No NEED for anything but that.

Either Valvoline or Pennzoil. I do not think that you would go wrong with either. Maybe go with the less expensive oil, and see how it goes for your car.

I'm going to recommend good 'ol Quaker State green bottle. You can't beat $10.50 a jug and it will work pis-sah.

Given the choices you mentioned, I would run Synpower. I scored a nice rebate on it last fall and it works great in my F150.

both oils get good UOA's If i remember correctly from the VOA section PP has a slightly stronger additive package. Dont quote me but i think the calcium level is a little higher in PP.

Oil: Valvoline SynPower 10W-30, SM & CF-4, Date of Manufacture 11-29-2007

Since the Napa Synthetic 10w30 I posted a few weeks ago is a Private Label product made for Napa by Valvoline I added it to this thread in the second column for comparison. I hope it does not confuse things.

If this information is true than it looks like PP is better. Check the date on the synpower as i think the data may be a year old or so.

You can not tell if an oil is better than another based on virgin oil samples. The current Synpower is on par with the M1's/PP's now. They all meet the same specifications other than Honda HTO-06. So it really does not matter.

Correct, but you can judge the additive package. If you believe that the numbers are correct. i have seen many numbers from labs come back looking very suspicious. I agree there is little difference between the top brands but if you are trying to choose one to stick with, pick the one that has the strongest additive package and does great in UOA's at the lowest price.

I have used both in my '05 Silverado, & it likes the PP better. Use the one that you feel like using. My wife's Infiniti QX4 is running good on Quaker State, can't beat it for $10.50 for a 5 qt. jug at WM.

Edge!! Oops thats not one of the choices, given the choices id go valvoline, i just cant get myself to jump on board the pennzoil bandwagon, regardless what i read on here
