Valvoline Restore and Protect

2 oci’s of restore and protect 5w-30 truck consumed it faster than 10w-30 and 15w-40

It didn’t help anything but was worth ****
It's not magic. It apparently cleans well enough to help many engines stop burning oil ostensibly by freeing up stuck oil control rings. If cleaning wouldn't help mitigate a different problem causing oil-burning, of course it didn't help.

There have been multiple reports of increased oil burning with Valvoline Restore and Protect to start and then it settles down and improves.

Agree with Glenda. Would not do fewer than 4 OCIs before making a decision.

Completely normal. The 5W-30 lower viscosity than the other two oils.

Keep feeding it Valvoline Restore and Protect and don't quit half way (don't be cheap) a serious business!

And then would it be Valvoline Restore and Protect for life or could it be something else?
Yeah I think if you haven’t had a reduction in 4 OCIs I might do another for good measure while you simultaneously look at other causes. Scored cylinders or valve stem seals.

I figure I'll just post my recent experience here instead of starting a new thread. I bought my neighbor's 2009 Toyota Camry LE in late September 2025. He mentioned that the 2AZ-FE motor "used some oil" and that it had been on a pretty steady diet of Kirkland 0w20 for the last 5 years or so.

Within a couple of weeks of purchase I completed the following:

- Ran a 20z bottle of Chevron Techron concentrate fuel treatment through it
- replaced the PCV valve (it was bad) and PCV hose (very stiff/brittle)
- Changed oil to 5w30 Restore and Protect and a Toyota rock catcher

My experiences since all of the above was completed:

515 miles after oil change- added .5qt to get oil back to top dot on dipstick
1265 miles after oil change (750 miles since last top up) added .5 qt to get oil to top dot
2065 miles after oil change (800 miles since last top up) added .5 qt to get oil to top dot

I asked my neighbor today if he remembered how many miles he would get between adding oil, and he really wasn't sure, maybe 1000 miles, but I think he was only adding when it was very close to the bottom dot, which is 1 qt of oil low.

the weather is going to be a little warmer this weekend so I'll probably swap the filter out and check it.

No one said it’s magic. It just didn’t work and consumption was far greater.

Quit a few people using Valvoline Restore and Protect report some increased oil consumption in the beginning, then it turns around after running for more OCIs. Could be the oil control rings lose some effectiveness as they clean up, then regain performance after getting past a certain level of cleaning. Hard to say why, but that's one theory. If your engine is burning oil for some reason other than low performing piston rings, then no oil or engine cleaner is going to help.

I also didn't see repeating oil consumption variations till I did like 14k miles on it.
Not a lower oil consumption - just an irregular one. If anything, the first Valvoline Restore and Protect-only run got my consumption higher - in a chaotic way.

"It just didn't work" yet

You haven't used it for long enough yet to say. Valvoline says minimum of 4 OCIs. Glenda didn't see anything after her third OCI. She almost gave up too. She was up to 3 quarts every 5000 miles I believe.
So what happens if after 4-5 ocis and oil consumption doesn’t taper off?
