This is a weird question with a specific purpose in asking. Do these oils have a normal motor oil smell or do either smell a bit like stinky gear oil?

Those smell normal to me. The Restore and Protect smells a little like gear oil.

If someone breaks down the ingredients in quality gear oil, out may pop a secret sauce (inside) for VRP.

Thanks Glenda. Based on what you said, I think it likely that Restore and Protect’s cleaning ingredient contains sulfur. That narrows it down. Dimethyl sulfoxide has been used to clean filthy engines, so maybe it is that or a similar molecule.

In reading that link, DS has a low flashpoint 180s and remains a solid until 63* F.
Would that disqualify it?

I think you are right. Valvoline products always seem to have their own unique smell.

DMSO becoming solid below 66 F, flash point of 192 F, and boiling point of 372 F are certainly undesirable for a motor oil ingredient. Most or all motor oil ingredients come with pros and cons. I’ve melted candle wax into motor oil then got it cold, and the wax was dispersed so that it didn’t crystallize. A motor oil ingredient being a solid, by itself, at cold temps. may not be a deal breaker but is undesirable. A boiling temp. of 372 F means DMSO would evaporate fairly quickly, relative to a typical OCI. These characteristics are not a problem for a quick flush, but I think they are problematic enough in a motor oil that I doubt the VRP ingredient is DMSO. However, a molecule that is similar but with more appropriate characteristics for a motor oil could do the trick.
