Valvetrain pic - Corolla -96 1.6 4A-FE

Hello.

Here's a photo of my recently acquired Toyota Corolla 1996 valvetrain as we were changing the timing belt.

The engine is a 1.6 4A-FE and the mileage is 70k miles. I have no idea what oil has been used before but this is taken after few hundred miles on Shell Helix Ultra 5W-40.

I have 1993 Geo Prizm 1.8L. Valvetrain looks exact clean as yours. Run conventional 10W30 with 3 to 5K OCI.

Bigger story, finding a 96 Corolla with only 70k mi. on the clock, wow.

I had a corolla like that as my very first car. That might be the best engine ever build. It just took so much beating and never failed ones. I got at 12 years old and with 350.000 km on the clock. When i had to let it die 2.5 years later (the states car inspection failed it because of rust) the engine was running beautyfully with 410.000 km on the clock. Id did however use a lot of oil at that time

Thank you for the kind comments.

I believe that maintenance has been following the usual North European habit of fully synthetic with 10k kilometer OCIs - that's what has been "norm" for this sort of daily drivers for a long time here.

That would be 6,000 mile OCI's with full synthetic. Very believable. I would imagine it takes bit longer for the average European to rack up 6k than the typical American driver, so it seems a very reasonable interval to me.

Had a 1991 Corolla SR-5 coupe with this same engine. Was equally clean thru the fill hole with 3-5k OCI's on Pennzoil conventional.

Great car, wish I hadn't sold it to a buddy....
