Valve train tick at start up

Im courious if my stock toyota filter is causeing a brief valve ticking noise when i start up my 2002 Tacoma in the cold mornings because of the thick media thats in the filter or does it have to do with the anti drain back valve. Could this happen? Im currently using amsoil 5w30

I beleive it's the ADBV. This start up noise can happen with any brand filter. Although Toyota filters are highly respected, I beleive if you try another one or another filter such as a Purolator Premium Plus the start up noise will go away. Many Toyota filters are made for Toyota by Purolator and others by Denso. Both are very good!

TRDUSA2002..how long does this valve train ticking noise last? It takes about one second, maybe two, to fill a filter with oil even if they Anti-drainback valve is not working properly or is missing entirely.

Yes, it could happen, and as Char Baby described, just replace the filter assy and see if the problem goes away. If so, you found your culprit, if not, investigate further.

Thanks fellas im going to try amsoil SDF-34 filter, its a over size filter and see it that helps once my warrenty is over i only have like 12K left.

Hydraulic lifters can and do drain down, too. (Hint: they're among the last items on the agenda that pressurized oil reaches - especially on overhead cam engines.

) On the other hand, if your "Taco" has solid lifters, the clearances will be at their maximum when cold, so there'll likely be greater opportunity for some lash noise until things heat up some.

Try the Wix-51348; with it's reinforced anti-drain back valve your ticking will be gone.
