Ticking noise in cold weather - why?

It reaches 40 grade when the oil reaches 100* C after about 20 minutes or so of operation. A 5W40 is thicker at all temperatures than a 5W20 would be. Read what Gary Allan mentioned above for a better understanding.

I looked at the Pennzoil website and the viscosity for Pennzoil Platinum 5w20 is 45.73 at 40C the 5w30 is 57.5 and the 5w50 is 106.

I just looked up the Rotella 5w40 and the viscosity at 40C is 95. The 5w20 PP was 45.73.

I changed from Rotella T Synthetic Oil 5w-40 & Pure One Purolator oil filter to Mobil 1 Synthetic 5w-20 & Mobil 1 over size M1-301 this element uses a synthetic fiber blend that can filter out very small particles also, like the Pure One

Maybe I didn't need to change the filter also, I used 5w-20 it has made a world of difference in the ticking noise.

2006 Dodge Grand Caravan 3.8L - it calls for 5w-20 I was using 5w-40 I will report back with some info soon as the weather gets single digits again maybe this has cured the ticking.

I think I was getting a dry start with the Puralator Pure One, when I took the filter off, I could shake the filter and hear a rattle inside.
I don't know if that means anything, but I do know the retaining spring was loose. I could send this to someone if they wanted to check into it.

I did exactly what you said and the problem has been corrected I used an MI -filter and Mobil 5w20 synthetic oil.
