So the "old" kenmoore is taking a dump and despite my best efforts it looks like repair will cost more than its worth. Thinking about going with some type of bagless upright but don't know where to start. Main concerns are budget and lifespan/durability as well as reasonable weight.

Our Miele is super quiet, heap filtration, and really light. Budget may be an issue, but perhaps you can find a used one?

My wife is in love with our SHARK Navigator Lift-Away(< $200). OTOH, I am not so much! There is a new Navigator PLUS(white @ ~ $200) that may have improvements. I could write a whole review, pros/cons(if anyone is interested) but, I won't unless I get requests

My SIL has a $600 Dyson and loves it but, I have never used it

I don't even know where to start except CR Mag!

Cheap and long lasting? You won't find it. Pull up the carpet and sweep.

Miele has a reputation as the best built...they start around $400. It meets 1 out of 3 of your criteria but you'll be happy you bought one. Bags are the best way to filter, sorry. Canisters leak and put the dust back in your house/lungs.

Hoover/Eureka are the cheapest, you get what you pay for...it will last 2-3 years. 2 outta 3 ain't bad.

Dyson...slick ads and you don't have to buy any filters/bags and a 5-year warranty. Pricey. You'll need the warranty. You'll have no vacuum when it's at the shop for a month waiting parts from Malaysia.

Shark is trying to be the "cheap" Dyson. No word on longevity...it's all plastic. I'm not impressed but some people are sold.

That's my .02, adjusted for inflation of course. My background? I sold all of these brands at one point or another in the last 7 years.

Proforce vacuum, off of EBay.
Not bagless, but bags don't cost much. Very durable, and rebuild able.

Eureka!

The one that says (out performs Dyson )

Its amazing, my neighbor was a Dyson rep for many years and she used mine n said ( wow, this is nice ) loll

~$128 at walmart

The Dyson we have seems to clean the same as any other at slightly higher cost, though I will say it does the job without needing any filter changes as advertised. Haven't had any repairs yet, don't really see how it would be any more or less reliable than any other vaccuum (in the price range, I can see how a Kirby would be better made).

We have a pretty nice Kenmore downstairs that has a cylindrical filter in the dustbin and another HEPA on the side, they always need replacement. It works well for a month or two after you do it. The Dyson does the same job but doesn't need new filters all the time. IIRC the Dyson was only at most 100 more than the Kenmore (400 vs 300). The Dyson is lighter and a lot quieter.

I suppose it depends how you use it, a bagged or filter model like our Kenmore doesn't really work when you would fill the bag every 3 days (three kids and a dog will do that). Back when I was a single guy I think I went through a bag every 3 years.

I've had a Dyson for about 5 years now and it's been excellent, and very reliable. The only complaint is that it's quite heavy (the newer ones are drastically lighter).

We have cats, and my wife's mom, aunt, and grandfather are all very allergic. The Dyson is good enough picking up cat-hair and filtering allergens that they have no issues when they're in our house.

If you want a vacuum with a long lifespan and good durability, then you need to stay away from the ones made mostly of plastic. We have an Oreck and it's mostly aluminum...its very durable and reliable...yes I has a bag, and yes, other vacuums like the Dyson have more suction, but an Oreck should last you a lifetime...

Oreck looks like they build a fantastic product, but what does plastic have to do with anything? It's a vacuum, not a club.

Our Oreck has been outstanding for the 4 years we have had it. Light weight, and powerful. Several members of my family also have the Oreck and all are satisfied.

Plastic simply doesn't hold up...I've had the Hoovers, the Bissels, the Eurekas, and even the Dysons and they're all plastic...seems to me like they're purposely made to be replaced every several years...throw-aways if you will...you'll pay more for an Oreck, but we've had ours for 7 years now and it still works the same as it did new...

Consumer Reports just reported on normal house (not shop) vacuums. A direct drive Kenmore was on top. I use a Eureka Smart Boss which typically shows up on Consumer Reports as a "Best Buy". I have one for each floor of my home. And one for parts. The direct drive eliminates belts. (The Eureka Smart Boss has a belt).

Okay, then here's a Dyson owner telling you that at least in regards to the Dyson, your concerns are unfounded. It is not a throw-away product and will last as long as you want it to. If anything, the way it is constructed makes it easier to service, disassembling it and putting it back together is as easy as building with Legos.

I am not saying that Dyson is better than Oreck, only saying that just because they are made of plastic does not mean that they won't hold up.

Our Kenmore is a direct drive (no belt) and having taken it apart a few times it is a good design and does seem more powerful (the beater bar, not the suction). But the constant filter replacement still makes it less used than our Dyson.

Plastic or not....I love our Hoover Wind Tunnel.

It was like $180 at Walmart. Yeah, it's plastic. But it's bagless and cleans really well. It's got a lot of suction. I've onwed mine for 5 years. Replaced the Hepa Filter ONCE ($18 from Amazon). The canister filter is washable.

Mine's still going strong. I'd buy another one.

these Wind Tunnels are rated pretty high. People like them. I like mine.

+1 Great vacuum cleaners, not bad prices for the base model like the Olympus.
German made machine with German made motors at that price you cant go wrong. They will last a long long time!

+1 also, we have a Miele and love it. You can get bags on Ebay for a really good price. You will be surprised at what it will pick up.

From personal experience, I hate bagless designs. Every time you empty out the canister (which is fairly often as they don't hold a lot), you're creating a dust cloud around your trash bin and you breathe that stuff in.
