I agree with others that plastic simply will not last a long time. Check out a Simplicity or Riccar. They are both made in Missouri. Look at the metal bottom plate/roller, and then compare with the bottom of a Dyson. It shouldn't take but 2 seconds to determine which one will last longer. They however, are not light. Metal weighs more than plastic. The problem I have with lightweights, I use the hose every time I vacuum. I don't wish to have a separate portable vac every time I need the hose.

Our ken more canister at 9 years broke near the cleaner thingy. I have no idea what to call it since cleaning is not mans work. Anyways the wife told me she needed a new vacuum. $5 worth of jb weld and she was back to doing woman's work.

Bought a Kirby about a year ago. Awesome....I vacuumed the morning before and just by chance a sales man came over, got sucked but was impressed with the demo on how much more [censored] was in the carpet after vacuuming with our Whrilpool.

Had a Dyson. Wife says :eh... its okay". It broke recently.
So I bought her the Shark Navigator. Wife says "eh... its okay".
Next time I'm telling her to buy whatever and I'm staying out of it. And whatever she buy's, I'm not going to ask her how she likes it.

Note that we use a vac 3 to 4 times EVERY DAY, some times of the year 7 days a week!

I have purchased dozens of heavy steel bodied Commercials. They need work every ten hours of operation and break regularly.

After about 8 Dysons we had one break. Our guy fell on it! Dyson repaired it FOR FREE. They come with a stunning 5 year warranty. No parts, no repairs of any kind, no bags, no replacement filters and great performance, despite being used way more than any home user ever.

Every Dyson upright has about 20 feet of hose right in the handle. Super easy and "dirt" simple to use.

My parents got my grandmothers old Kirby from the early nineties. Thing is a beast, picks up anything, and is built like a tank.

We currently own 3 Dyson vacuum cleaners, and have had Dysons for about 10 years now. Two at our main house (one upstairs and one downstairs) and the third is at our lake house.

We recently replaced one-we had given one of ours to my elderly parents when their $99 Wal Mart special quit working. The only vacuum I considered replacing it with was another Dyson.

I've never had an issue with any of them and they all do a great job of keeping the floors clean. I prefer bagless design-it's a simple matter of removing the canister, taking it out to the garage, and then emptying the contents into the garage garbage can. No fussing with bags and no extra expense. They do an outstanding job on carpets, as well as our stone tile and hardwood floors.

All 4 have filters that need washed out once or twice a year (it takes perhaps 10 minutes). That's the only maintenance they've ever needed. The hose and attachments are some of the most usable I've ever had.

Check your local Craigslist, you can find most every model mentioned for a fraction of the cost.

+1 on the Kirby. We bought ours in '98. A little pricey and heavy (all metal). It's a vacuum you can pass down to your children.

We broke down and got a Dyson about 4 years ago and it's been fantastic. Got it on super sale from Lowe's because they beat a competitor's sale by 10%. We use it at least 5 days a week and it really doesn't lose suction. We also kept our old Dirt Devil which works great too but just needs to have the foam filter cleaned after every 3 uses or it will lose suction. So far the Dyson is totally maintenance free, just empty the can on it every week into the garbage in the garage. No belts on it to be replaced which is nice.
I think the Dyson is expensive because you are paying for the warranty of 5 years. The hose on it is kind of awkward to use IMO but now I'm used to it. I use it a lot for hard to reach places for cob webs and dust. We run the heck out of it.

Okay, then here's a Dyson owner telling you that at least in regards to the Dyson, your concerns are unfounded. It is not a throw-away product and will last as long as you want it to. If anything, the way it is constructed makes it easier to service, disassembling it and putting it back together is as easy as building with Legos.

I am not saying that Dyson is better than Oreck, only saying that just because they are made of plastic does not mean that they won't hold up.


Actually it means exactly that...it's simple physics really...moving parts spinning in plastic mounts are going to wear out those mounts much faster than the same design mounted in metal...you are much less likely to find 20 or 30 year old plastic constructed vacuums still in use as compared to those made of metal...I will likely never have to replace my Oreck, and if I decide to, more than likely it will only be because I want something different, not because it needs to be replaced...

We have used them for years and still use one upstairs at our home, my parents have one for their main and weekend homes. Very reliable, pretty light and long lasting.

True, because if you buy the right thing initially, you can avoid what this guy has gone through, which ends up being cheaper in the long run.

My wife wanted a Dyson Animal. She bought it 2 years ago and loves it. No problems so far. I can't get too excited about it, it's a vacuum cleaner, and this is the internet, so what ever you have, it will be junk to somebody else.

If the person that is going to be dumping the dirt has any allergies, stay away from a bagless. I have read numerous reports, and the number 1 complaint against bagless vacs is having to dump them. Some people really like them. But a lot of people go back to bag vacuums after owning a bagless.

I have a Compact/"pig" vacuum that is a 1964 model.Found it in an apartment building in the early 80`s that my dad bought.Put a new cord on it & to this day I use it on all my cars,it works great !
