Despite me "nagging" my nephew to DIY his brakes all summer, he waited until the coldest time of the year to declare his car undrivable. Normally we'd DIY it with mail-order or AutoZone parts, or take it to or local mechanic. The nephew is too impatient to leave his car at the mechanic for a couple of days and too unskilled to DIY it, so...PepBoys it is.

They take customers 1st come / 1st served, like Firestone does, which is nice not to need an appt. Costs were $40 pads, $33 ea rotor and $130 to install. Estimate started at $260 but the writer knocked it down to $225 and mounted 2 tires for $20, minus a $20 rebate on brake service.

Anyway, not a bad deal for same day-service. As long as it works ok. Euro cars spec the "semi-ceramic" pads....whatever, I don't care that much, it's DONE!

On a side note.

The writer was a young black kid in an area where people pride themselves on being racist. He was easy to talk to and helped out with the pricing. Respectfull and thorough. Pick-up time he was not around, just the service manager and a few knuckle head service writers. I went out of my way to compliment the kid and tell the manager that he "helped make the deal". The manager appreciated it, but the other writer said, "Brandon is a good boy". I was offended and snapped right back, "he knows his [censored] too". Brandon will get all 10s on the online survey.

You called the young man "kid". "Good boy" is a racist term for what you called a kid? In my neck of the woods, the term "good boy" is not racist as long as you are talking about as you used the term a "kid", A grown man would be another thing.

You could be right that this fellow was making a racist remark.
On the other hand if he was not............the PC crowd continues to run amuck.

I volunteer coaching baseball at our local high school. "Atta booooyy" or "atta kid" is used all the time, regardless of the color of the players skin. If you heard that would you consider me a racist? Just wondering......

BTW you related to John Murtha? I recall him making similar comments about his area of Pennsylvania before the last election. LOL

I take the liberty to call anyone 1/2 my age "kid".

Calling the only black employee at a national chain store "boy", is far away a different thing. I guess you had to be there, unless you trust my judgement in the matter. Most people I know would, black and white.

I'll take your word for it, you seem like a good egg...Whoops Sorry.. LOL.

IMO "good boy" in referencing ones job performance or character is not the same as calling someone...."boy"...especially if that "good boy" is a "good kid"....but again, I was not there and I do not know the person commenting or the area where the store is located.

Pep Boys is great. I've used them twice over the last few months, and they've always been good to me.

I looked on the Pep Boys website, I guess they used the Prostop "Platinum" semi-metallic pads?

I actually did not see the reciept. I took a hands-off approach as much as I could in order for my nephew to get a feel for the sport. I sent him there ahead of me to get things started, and he was in a huff by the time I arrived. I took the opportunity to make it an object lesson for him to stay cool and talk through a dilemma rather than (over) reacting in an emotional way. He has that condition really bad.

As for PepBoys in general...
I could tell you stories which would wake you up screaming in the middle of the night. There are however certian jobs and conditions which make PB an option. Some things like alternators, starters and maybe some suspension parts really do not have a lot of room to be "tweeked" as they are installed and basicly idiot-proof, either they work or not.

Brakes are one item I really specialize in and far prefer to do them myself. I honestly think all chains stores are about the same quality on a brake job, just slap in the pads and rotors and that's it. No cleaning the guide pins, new boots etc, not gonna happen. Midas, Sears, Firestone all really just slap in the parts and PepBoys is no different. Dealers have insanely priced parts and often go the extra mile to tweek the calipers and stuff, doing a quite good job. They at least won't used siezed or bad parts. Anyway, I know Audi brake jobs frequently running $1000-$1200.

This is a happy median. We could change pads if he does not like them, tweek and paint the calipers this summer...but I doubt it.

btw- he went with a pair of Altimax HPs at my recommendation. Not sliding into a ditch somewhere with his "band" buddies seems a priority. I picture that Safe Auto insurance commercial where the slacker kid is digging his car out of a snowbank with a hubcap at nite as the cop rolls up on him.

That's my nephew to a tee! 12 pts on the licence at this time.

I have yet to find a decent set of aftermarket brake pads that I like for Honda/Acura vehicles that are similarly priced.

They inevitably end up being noisy or dusting like crazy. Not to say there aren't decent aftermarket brake pads, but with 900 different brake pad types/brands out there, it's a gamble.

I use OEM pads on my personal vehicle and all of my friends Honda vehicles without a problem. No noise, very low dust, and long life for about $40-60 dollars per set. Not bad in my book.

Sorry that was way off topic.

If you can get a decent brake job (plus rotors!) for $225 that's a steal in this business. Pads + resurface costs more than that in our shop. Then again, when I do a brake job I grind the rust/crud off of the pad mounting brackets, molykote them along with the back of the pads, clean and re-grease the caliper slide pins, etc.

Honestly, I don't ever use OEM Honda rotors. Overpriced, IMO. My car has Honda pads + Carquest rotors. SHHHHHHH!!!!!

Cast iron is cast iron, whatever way you cut it. Rotors are rotors.

No idea what you're talking about. What brands/model pads have you had issues with?

i wasnt there but it sounds like you overeacted to the black kid being called a boy

i take offense to the not caring at Sears. i did brakes at sears and i cleaned and lubed everything perfect, never had a labor related comeback.

o and that's a cheap brake job for a volvo. the R model is significantly more expensive for brakes.

Looks like the pads are Prostop Part #PGD783M.

It's interesting how that part number is identical to the Raybestos part number. I wonder if it's the same pad.

The ProStop Ceramics are definitely made by Satisfied. The part numbers are the same, the grid-lock technology is the same, etc.

The semi-metallic ProStop Platinum pads have Raybestos part numbers though.
