USPS Deserves to go down

I live in a town of 25,000 and we have 2 post offices. When I mail a letter to someone local the mail is sent 97 miles away to Fort Smith to be processed and then back to be delivered. I do not understand why local mail is not processed here. I do not know of any one that wants all that junk and yet for a cheap amount the companies can keep our mail boxes full. Think of the amount of money USPS could collect if they charge full price for junk mail

I love it when I can get my online purchases shipped USPS. They are always the fastest cheap option. Compared to first class or express mail the FedEx and UPS ground options are horrible. They can do next day well but anything slower is pointless from them.

When you send a package via FedEx, it goes to Memphis TN even if it was destined to your next state neighbor. That's how it works.

I think the post office determined it was more efficient to sort the mail even local through the main post offices with sorting equipment.

And if 90% of the mail is outbound, it doesn't make sense to sort it multiple times. One of my friend's dad works for the post office and he said they rarely use human to sort anymore. The automatic sorting is very good these days.

Several years ago my brother worked at a manufacturing plant in Texas that made the sorting machines for the postal service.

Government is controlling their price structure, so the typical monopoly model doesn't work. They are being forced to have too low a price for the service they are providing.

And if you read the article that I posted, you would see that early on, they were charging higher prices for an inferior service. That is why private competition nearly put them out of business.

I'm not interested in anything the Cato institute says. I try to avoid agenda driven propaganda as much as possible. It might help if you would use another source or multiple sources.

Is the article inaccurate?

From wiki:
Quote:
The American Letter Mail Company was able to reduce the price of its stamps significantly and even offered free local delivery, significantly undercutting the 12-cent stamp being sold by the Post Office Department. Although the business was forced by the U.S. Government to close shop after only a few years, it succeeded in temporarily driving down the cost of government delivered mail.

How about something more recent than 1844?

So you don't want us to learn from history and would like to repeat the same mistakes over and over again?

Do you seriously think the same business model from 1844 works?

Seriously, there were no Internet, telephone line, telegram, airplane, mail order catalog, etc.

And UPS and FedEx is viable alternative to the government run postal service for the more profitable package delivery businesses. It is the junk mail and letters that they are not in the businesses of and those are money losers. So, we already have successful competitions that make your argument (of monopoly and profit) invalid.

That's funny, you mean like slavery and near slavery, the industrial revolution and company owned towns since we're going all the way back to 1844. There's a lot to learn from history if one doesn't have a selective and narrow viewpoint.

Never said it did. Their business model in 1844 didn't work, either. The rather obvious point is that private, for profit competition would have put a government, non-profit entity out of business if not for a granted monopoly.

And the modern, HIGHLY REGULATED USPS still can't make it with that same monopoly in place.

They are unable to engage in these activities by law, so of course they are not in those businesses. What information do you have that says private companies can't do the same job at a profit?

What in the world does slavery (enforced by government) have to do with the USPS??

What in the world does the American Letter company in 1844 have to do with today's USPS? And you were the one that brought up learning from history. You like to dodge and wiggle out of things.

I posted an article showing how inefficient the USPS has ALWAYS been. It's not a new condition. That's what the American Letter Company has to do with it.

If you can explain how slavery ties into the USPS in any way, I'd have no problem discussing it.

I never said it did have anything to do with the USPS. You like to build strawmen, Shannow was right about that. Although the American Letter Company delivering locally for free back in 1844 might constitute slavery, charity, or the dumping of services.

Every established country has government run postal services, as well as government build road, because even in some situation where they lose money, it is a necessity that a country's businesses run on and citizen live on for their daily lives.

I don't understand the eagerness to destroy a country's daily life just for ideology purposes. There are alternatives and there are ways to fix it without completely destroying it, we don't have to completely abolish it just because it is government.

Here's a great example of real life with USPS.

Recently bought stuff from a guy in Canada. Sent him a check via USPS special international mail for $23.95.

That was on 10-8-11. It's still not there!

High rates, bad service.
