I bought some military surplus rifle grease from sportsmansguide a few years ago, was a 3 can pack for $10 I think, meets mil-spec something, probably from 1941. I got it to use on my fal 308, but I've also used it on my kimber 45 procarry (4") and on my browning 9mm with no ill effects after at least a few hundred rounds. I did notice the slide action was much smoother as opposed to straight rem oil or dry-lube stuff. The guns get cleaned after every shoot anyway, but a buddy just got a new kimber and I read thru his manual and it stated to not use grease. What would be the reason for that?
Only thing I could think of is in real cold weather it could maybe gum up or freeze.

My guess is the tolerances are much tighter. So "grease" would actually put a barrier to smoother operation. In colder climates where a weapon can be exposed grease can almost be a barrier ( almost be like sludge).

When I was in the service, I had charge of a small M16 armory in a northern tier base. (wind chill down to -65).As I recall we used a regulation oil to lubricate after cleaning.

Some guns have very close tolerances that don't like grease. Some will even jam because of grease. Though modern greases, like TW-25 or Tetra lube, shouldn't cause a problem. Just try it, and see what works best.
