I have a 2005 Town car and have always used 5W20. Car has 210,000 miles. On start up there is a very slight "clanking"noise for a second or two until the oil circulates. I have cases of 5W30 and 10W30. I was thinking of using the 5W30 in winter and 10W30 in summer. I think this would give added protection. Any thoughts. Thanks to all.

What you want to do is fine. When you finish up the 10W30 in your stash run 5W30 year round, and don't look back.

Yep 5 or 10W30 will be fine. Once you run out use a high mileage version as well.

It will do just fine on either one.

These engines were back specced to 5w-20 in 2001...for OEM fleet fuel economy to meet CAFE standards. They were originally designed and run on 5w-30 from around 1993-2000. I've had 3 Lincoln Continentals (97, 01, 02) and use 5w-30 in winter and 10w-30 in summer. I prefer to use what the original engineers designed....not what the marketing staff and lawyers preferred. Currently using QS HM 5/10w-30. I got over 230,000 miles on my 1997 using only 5w-30...and it died of old age and undercarriage rust, not of any oil lubrication issue.

Unless you live in the arctic or around the equator.

It will work in both of those locations as well.

Correct...your engine's original specification was for a 30.

... and 15W-40 in summer, 10W-30 in winter with that many miles. Bearings are geting some clearance from wear. Should be quiet as can be

You'll be fine in the equator for sure. Artic? Maybe synthetic version just for safety.
