Using 5W-30 in a new Honda

Depends on what you drive. A high low end torque engine might not feel it. But an engine designed for output at high revs 3k-5k, it is very noticeable.

LMAO! Having driven M5's with both 10w60 and 5w30 in them, I couldn't feel a difference at all

I have run 10w60 in everything from Big Honda sport bikes to old M3 4 bangers and could never tell the difference.
I take that back the one difference was the buggers didn't blow up like that Fireblade did at 9000 RPM while driving.

Well the 10W-60 is known to shear a lot in service but I am surprised you could notice the difference especially on start-up in the winter.
I certainly noticed the difference on start-up when I switched from Mobil 1 0W-40 to Mobil 1 0W-20 for winter use a few years ago in my Bimmer. The increased responsiveness is noticeable during the the first 5-10 minutes of running time.

The difference in viscosity on start-up in the summer between a low VI 5W-20 and typically light higher VI 5w30 very likely will not be noticeable. If you tried a ultra high VI 0W-20 like the Toyota 0W-20 vs a 5w30, that definitely should be noticeable, and I think everyone who has tried the Toyota 0W-20 on BITOG has commented on the increased engine responsiveness and power during the warming up period and that's often even compared to a 5w-20.

Both were driven on hot summer days, there was no winter use.

Much of the commentary I read about the Toyota "nectar of the Gods" was post warm-up differences, which I think are all psychological. I have no problem swallowing warm-up period differences, as I've observed them myself with my various oil weight changes during winter experimentation with the Expedition.

In reality if they offered only half the weights they offer now it would still cover almost every passenger car engine in the world.

A .2% increase in fuel economy is noticeable to a company's bottom line regarding CAFE. But you won't feel a difference that small in a car's performance.

Have you looked at the number of tire $ize$ lately?

When the poor underappreciated, underemployed & undersupported recent college graduate saddled with all that NASTY student loan debt finds that, in addition to her $575 per month car payment, her $200 per month insurance payment & her $125 per month cell phone bill NOW her year-old car needs new tires @ $1400 per set, mounted and balanced...

She'll probably have to hit Mom & Dad up for some extra spending money when she gets back home from that part-time job at Starbucks, after she goes to the pharmacy for her birth-control prescription refill (Thanks to Mom & Dad's medical coverage!).
 
I wouldn't think twice about using a 5W30 conventional if I had that in my stash. I haven't heard a convincing argument about whether 5W30 or 5W20 is better, unless the car is used for lots of short trips. Modern car engines when driven and maintained sensibly will make it into 200,000-300,000 miles range or more using 5W30 or 10W30, even if more recently the car manufacturers specify 5W20 for them. Also, don't forget that a typical 5W30 grade conventional will shear down to a thick 20 grade/thin 30 grade oil after a couple thousand miles.
