I have an '04 honda and it specs 5w-20. I want to buy the oil in a 5quart jug but stores usually don't carry them in that size so I was wondering do any honda owners here use 5w-30 in there engine that specs 5w-20? Have you noticed any adverse effects? And does anyone know exactly why honda specs 5w-20 since most new cars use 5w-30? with the exception of ford. thanks.

I have used RL and RP 5w30 in my Acura(Honda) TL. Both have performed very well. I now have M1 5w20 in the sump. Note: None of these oils were purchased/available in 4lt jugs. Only in the individal qts or lts. I think I woudnt worry about the size of the container, just the product.

You can run whatever your little asianmaniac heart desires my friend. Do a search for "Honda". You can run a 5w-30.

I have just switched my '03 Accord from 5W-20 Superflo to 5W-30 Havoline synthetic. So far I can not notice any difference in power or economy.

The same engine family when sold in other markets requires 5W-30 and even thicker oils, so I have no fear about causing extra wear.

You can use 5W-30 without fear IMO.

asiancivicmaniac, IMHO, if you're talking dinos, I'd stick with the 5w20 and suffer with the qt bottles. If your talking a quality synthetic like M1, 5w30 should work well, especially in Florida.

However, in the grand scheme of things, proper oil and filter change intervals are the most important factor, short of going way of base with a dino 20w50.

using m1 5w30 in my 04 civic... no probs. found 0w20 on sale in a neighbouring town.. gonna try that next!

anyone try GC in a civic? i know it is a heavy 30wgt... ive said it before and ill say it again a civic would run on olive oil. ill-effects of GC might be loss in mileage? anything else?

Good thoughts from our friend 427. FYI, Wal-Mart usually has Pennz 5W-20 in 5 quart containers.

If you look through this board, many Honda owners are doing fine with 0/5W-20, many with 0/5W-30. As you like...

2003 Accord V6 ( I brainfarted and called it an 04 in another thread for you consistency watchers)

I used M1 10W-30 for the first couple oil changes because I was using up the oil I had on hand. After that I've been using M1 5W-30 and probably will continue to do so unless someone starts stocking 5qt jugs of 5W-20.

As I mentioned in another thread, I took the car on a long trip a year or so ago and averaged 31mpg with one stint of 34mpg. On the highway at 80+mph with the AC on.

I am currently using M1 5W30 in my 2003 Element. I've also used M1 0W20. Both seem to be fine for the engine. I've used 5W30 for the most of car's life (36K). No damage done.

Just to let you know, the models sold in Japan (also made in Ohio) allows oils up to 40 wt.

To the original poster, I run m1 5w30 in my 02 civic for the exact same reason you want to. its cheaper by the jug. I've run it through the texas winter and its been doing great, the biggest difference is that if feels better psychologically when I have my civic at 5200 rpm in fifth heading south on hwy 83.

I'm running GC in my wife's 2000 Civic, with excellent results.

I've also noticed on Shell's website in Austrailia that you can run a 10w-40 in these engines.

Most of my local honda/acura customers run the Amsoil Series 2000, 0w-30 in these applications, which "spans" the recommendation of SAE 5w-20. I've seen excellent results w/ 10k-12k oil/filter change intervals even in cars that are driven under severe service conditions.

At the Honda dealer, they had Honda 0w-20 oil. Figures soon as Mobil switches back, Honda calls for it. It's for the Hybrids. The service tech said don't run it in your accord, it's like water. Amazing the bs that flies around in this world.
