car51 - on the last photo notice the epoxy is delaminating from the end cap. If you look closely, it is probably rust. If I am right, there will be rust on the dome end cap on the outlet side of the filter. I have had trouble getting a good shot of this because I don't have good lighting. In any event, this is exactly what I have been seeing. Wide pleat space on either side of the splice and sometimes rust on the dome end cap.

I think the rust forms soon after manufacturing and is a result of epoxy that has not completely cured. The uncured epoxy is still giving off water.

Thanks for the well done post on behalf of Clind.

So, the problems have not been addressed as of Aug 31, 2015.

Looks like damage from cutting it open, in the last pic.

Definitely cutting damage in the last FL-820S photo.

Were you trying to cut the media? The first picture looks uncut the last looks cut. It looks very fibrous. Lot of these going on cars at dealerships every day. They don't cut them open so who knows what has happened. Thanks for good pictures of a filter I used to use almost always.

I used a hacksaw to open and got too deep on the new 820S and cut the media - my fault on the damage.

Yes the epoxy is starting to separate or not well glued to the cap. It peeled off pretty easy when I pulled at it after taking the picture. I didn't see any rust in either of the new ones.

On all the old ones the metal cap on the thread end either separated when taken apart or was easily separated. I am not sure that is the end of the world as the spring held it together and it likely sealed ok, but not a good sign.

After seeing problems here I went into the bucket of used filters and looked at a few. No tears on mine, but the worst 820S in the used picture is likely the one I used last winter (14-15) with some cold starts. I have a warm garage so cold starts are minimal, but was out of town for vacation and had some real cold -20 starts.

I go 5000 miles on these. I will be using Wix in the future. I can get a real Wix brand from a local parts store with my work discount for less than the Motorcraft at Walmart anyway.

Looking at 3 different oil filters ... 2 new, 1 used.

I have cut open numerous FL400s filters, and I also had one where one of the metal end-caps came off with a little pulling, but it didn't just fall off, and so I suspect the spring held it in place just fine. Interestingly enough, the glue underneath completely held its shape, so I think even if the endcap was capable of 'coming off' the glue would have continued to do its job.

For what it's worth, I've run 7,500 miles on every single one of the FL400s filters that I've run in my fusion, and I've yet to find one that didn't very clearly hold up under that FCI.

All these motorcraft filters that have been cut lately all seam to be the old style filters with the holed center tube. Has anyone run across a louvered motorcraft yet with the supposed updated media?

I don't recall anyone posting any Motorcraft filters with a louvered center tube. Time will tell if they also make the switch from holes to louvers.

I agree the 400s have not had any tearing problems. I have no worries using the one on my shelf.

I do not see what is so special about these filters.

If it didn't have a Ford logo, I suspect it would be overlooked like a thousand other no-name filters

Cheap. Readily available at Walmart. Decent quality. I have run a bunch of the FL-820s in the past and never saw a tear, and I currently have the big FL-1A on a diesel boat engine. Not designed for diesel use but the filters look perfect when I take them off after 100-200 hours running Delo 15w40. I originally figured out the FL-1A would fit by tracking down information on the same engine being used in tractors and fork lifts.

Actually, It's non-Ford owners who seek them out for the quality and availability. They are VERY popular with Toyota and Lexus V8 and V6 owners, and I run one on our Lexus.

High filtration efficiency (I believe 94% at 20 mic. has been tested), lots of media, intelligent thread-end by-pass, sturdy construction. Comparable to a Wix but 1/2 the cost.
