I'm not talking about fuel system cleaners, but the Gas Treatment bottles, by STP, Gumout, store brands, Prestone, etc...

What are the benefits of these gas treatments, and should you really use them every tank?

i would not every tank. not even every 10 tanks! amazing what these guys come up with... i'd rather put my dollars into the tank... in a few years my car would be weighed down...

IMO, I would say no. Something that works well throughout the year is ISO-heet (red bottle). It keeps moisture absorbed in tank. This product is good to use once every 3-4 months.

I don't use them. Money is better spent on a fuel filter.

I have had to use a little dry-gas a couple times in the past 5 years. Both times were due to getting some gas with water in it, causing a problem with the car.

This winter I have been using a little MMO in every other tank, and I see no benefit in that. Maybe an extra lubrication for the fuel pump and fuel system, but I wouldn't be able to justify that or notice it.

The benefits are that the manufacturers make a lot of money.

IMO, these products aren't needed if name brand gasoline is used. Using a 'complete fuel system cleaner' like SL1, Regane, Techron etc..once or twice a year (before an oil change) is a good idea.

Yes, there are many bad effects of ethanol's tendency to absorb moisture. But for those of us in freezing weather there is that benifit. Iso-heet comes in two flavors, one Isopropyl and one Methanol. Ethanol does the same thing either of those would, at the concentrations we're talking about.

You are right. All that is left over advertisement from 30+ years ago when fuel was not as good as it is today. The top tier fuel is very clean and for the most part does not need a cleaner, although I think it needs some lubricity because of the added alcohol.

Bepperb does ethanol pull water out of your fuel tank?

The main thought/idea/consensus is that if the fuel system cleaner makes (more) contaminants pass the rings and enter the oil, it will be removed when you change the oil.

Alcohol (ethanol) does not pull it out of the system, it helps it mix with the fuel, but the alcohol can only remove so much water from the system. Not all alcohol can be used to remove water from the system. I cannot remember which ones can and which ones can not.

Maybe its a NY thing, but I see tankers going into the Sunoco station or even the Shell station sometimes with no logo on the tanker. They drop fuel, then pull out drive a few miles and dump fuel somewhere else in a no name gas station. Typically the gas at the no name station can sell from 5 to 10 cents a gallon less. What I'm saying is, in my area I have little to no faith in top tier gas stations. Maybe in other parts of the US it is different.

Because modern gas has small amounts of good cleaners in it, I would not use those products every tank.
A strong in tank cleaner once or twice a year is a good idea.
That said, I DO use 2 stroke or MMO in my gas all the time, but not mainly for cleaning- they are for lubing.

The Top Tier folks buy their gas at the same dopot as everone else. Base gasoline is essentially the same for all. The additives are added to the tanker truck. If the truck delivers to a Top Tier station and has fule left over, it will deliver it to another station that needs gas and they get a deal on more additive for their normal cost. Top Tier requires that all gas at their stations be at the certified additive level. Since eac uses a specific additice package, leftovers will goto a discount station.

I like to add it before an oil change so that anything that gets washed down to the crankcase is eliminated with the oil change.

Its easy to become an additiveaholic , u read the pretty bottle, u rationalize it will work for your needs and u try it. Been there and still do that, but have cut down to one for cleaning out bad fuel and water, Stabil only, works for me, ethanol loves water , so stabil gets it out.................amen, PS its a cleaner for carbs and fuel injectors,,read the bottle, not just the pretty colors,,,,,,,,,,lol

Stabil does a good job of removing water, but not matter what it say about cleaning, it does a very poor job of it.

The STP in the red bottles and the Gumout in the white bottles that say carb cleaner, do a good job of removing water and a lousy job of cleaning.

My routine for the past 25-years has always been to keep at least a 1/2 tank of gasoline, cuts down on condensation, and every 5K I pour in a bottle of REGANE.

In 25-years I have never had any kind of water problem, I have never had an injector go bad, and I have never had to replace a fuel filter.

As for as the original question about every tank, send that extra money to me.
