From what I read we were the leaders in hypersonics, but it was put on the back burner over the last few decades due to involvement in the middle east. It appears we're now directing interests in countering Russia and China.

Russia has been an embarrassment so far in Ukraine.

That's pretty much the only reason we only have "cold" wars instead of another WW since WW2.
