Updated Valvoline MaxLife NextGen datasheet

Just saw the updated datasheet for NextGen MaxLife. Take a look at the 5w30. Specs looks almost exactly the same as the Full Synthetic MaxLife 5w30. Looks like they also added more calcium and the same amount of moly compared to the Full Synthetic.

Wonder what the difference would be between the two since the specs are basically the same.

Id imagine they would keep very similar add packs for commonality.

As for base fluid? They have the opportunity to crack/distill to feed stocks they desire, so they could make something real close Id bet.

Nextgen Maxlife is thicker, has higher volatility and does not carry Valvoline's internal blessing for Dexos 1.

The choice is easy...

I have to wonder if those two lines will eventually converge. If they can get the same performance out of recycled oil, why bother selling two different kinds? I suspect we're a few years away from all Valvoline becoming NextGen.

Those are both old PDS's.

NextGen performance is identical to MaxLife.

That's good news-I can mix ML NG with Valvoline MaxLife Synthetic with no dropoff in performance-& FAR sure beats $25-ish for 5 qts @ Meijer or O'Reilly's (the only 2 places I've ever seen Valvoline MaxLife Synthetic)!

Interesting, I wonder why the data sheet does not state Dexos-1 compatibility.

Valvoline doesn't claim that Maxlife, Maxlife Nextgen or Maxlife Synthetic meet Dexos 1 on their respective product information sheets.
All of these releases are fairly old, with the two for the presumably syn blend Maxlife products dated 3/4/11 and the one for syn Maxlife dated 12/15/10.
According to Valvoline, Maxlife and Nextgen Maxlife have identical formulation and performance, while the only thing special about Synthetic Maxlife appears to be lower NOACK.
In comparing VIs of the 5w30s, the synthetic is actually lower than either of the other Maxlife products and it has lower TBN along with less calcium.
On the Valvoline site, Durablend is still listed and while Nextgen Synpower is also listed, there is no product info sheet for it as yet.

I didn't see that on their site, but I may have simply not looked at the right pages.
I have little doubt that the oil would meet the spec.

NextGen ML has the identical performance of red bottle MaxLife.

Both are dexos 1 compliant.

Again, the NextGen PDS is almost 2 years old, that's why it doesn't reflect this change.

While it doesn't have the high temperature stability of a top tier synthetic, ML will do a very nice job cleaning and conditioning engine seals. Very good wear control too. ML is not necessarily designed for super long drains and in a turbo it wouldn't by my first choice. Although dexos 1 is pretty stringent.

I wonder if ML contains any esters....this oil likes to creep out of the bottle.

I know they re-refine this and so presumably could bring the base oil up to group III. But what about the PAO and ester that is mixed into the used oil collection tanks? That must come through in the mix at some fractional level, but would there be a way they could separate those higher quality bases from the general mix?

I'm glad I picked up some of the older NGML in 5w30 on closeout while it's still a little on the thicker side...

You can still run it thicker by adding 1/2 to 1 quart of 10w40 to the current mix.

No complaints so far with ML 5w30 in the Honda. Only 600 miles on it. I'll be curious to see how the oil consumption is. Noack is 10.8% for this oil, which is good.
