Hi.

I don't think my motor is making any MORE noises than it was, and I have a feeling that I should NOT replace the PureONE oil filter I now have in my motor. It still makes a slight brief amount of noise when I start it up, but I don't think it's going to go away. I think, as someone said, that I'm hearing the cam chain on startup.

I'm due for an OCI this Nov or Dec. The PureONE OF will have been in for a few months by then. Should I install a new one at that time or let it go another year in with the new Pennzoil Platinum 10-30 I'm going to add?

Thank you.

Joe

I have an OEM OF and I think I'm going to install it this Nov or Dec when I do my next OCI, just to see how it runs with it, with the PP 10-30. If I don't like it I can always take it out and replace it with a WIX, a NAPA Gold, or another PO or something, and then top off my oil with a little more PP.

I had startup noise and running noise with 5w30 syntec in my Yaris 1.5L and wix filter. I dumped a pint and added a pint of 10w40 syntec and everything is better; all noises subsided and great power and economy all around. I think the vii in the 40 smooths things out - the 10w30 may have no vii, and you have little-to-no oil traction and windage on the cams. Try it. The 10w 40 is good for topoff - europeans do viscosity tayloring/blending all the time, I dont know why its not practiced much here or talked about on this board. Maybe folks are nnot that in TUNE with their engines needs/

Interesting.

I used to often run 10-40 in the Summers in New Hampshire, even though the book says 10-30. It's not too cold in the Tennessee Winters so a little 10-40 might be a good idea. I might just try a quart or so of it.

That could be.

FWIW a Pureone has cured pronounced start up rattle in my '08 Xterra (VQ40DE). The previous filter was a K and N bought when Advance had their Castrol Syntec and filter for $30.

Any filter can have a faulty ADBV. Silicon valves just don't fatigue nearly as soon. A bad one will be worse than a nitrile good one that waits for 3k before striking up the band.

PS : I put in a new PureONE oil filter a couple weeks ago. When I do my next OCI, do you think I should add a new oil filter at that time or would the 3 month old PureONE with maybe 500 miles on it be OK to run?

Joe

I would keep it if it is not giving you problems as long as you do not mind not taking it off.. How long are you going to run the next OC?

Hi.

I want to do one year OCI with PP 10-30 and PureONE filter. So, if I leave this OF in, it will be in 15 months at my Dec 2010 OCI.

Am thinking of adding 1/2 qt or so of heavier oil, like Pennzoil 10-40 to see if it reduces the brief and possibly harmless startup noises.

I switched from a DELCO Premium UPF-44 to a WIX (or NAPA GOLD, same filter) on my 1998 Corvette because of flow concerns. My cold/startup oil pressure went up 10-15 psi, and since the Corvette oil pressure sensor is AFTER the oil filter, this means more oil flow.

You must balance oil filtration with oil flow. Blackstone Labs told me they rarely see any difference with oil filters in their UOAs.

I've used the ACDelco UPF-44 Ultraguard on my 02 Vette, along with WIX, NAPA Gold and Amsoil filters and have never seen any differences in oil pressure between them.

Are you saying your cold idle oil pressure went up 10-15 psi, or is that 10-15 psi increase at some higher engine RPM with cold oil? If at idle, it seems very strange because in order to see an increase or decrease in oil pressure after the filter, the oil pump would have to be in pressure relief mode. Maybe you have a modified oil pump(?).

I'd say the filter would be fine if left in for 15 months. Cut it open after you swap it out and I'm sure it will look fine inside.

If all else equal, oil type, oil mileage, outside temp, then switching filters back should show a decrease in oil pressure again. Brand new oil may flow better, and filters too. I think more tests would be necessary to say the filter did it. Also this assumes the filter inlet oil pressures are equal in the two cases, so the pressure drop is 10-15 across the filter media, and that seems like a lot.
