Back in Arizona. Finally
OK, it's the first week into February and my test car, an '02 silver BMW 330ci has been a very busy boy.

He's been to the Texas hill country (San Marcos area) twice and has been in his 50-50 work rotation, sitting outside both at my house and in the Port of Houston parking lot when he's working his week. When off, he's garaged.

I have washed him at least 6 times since this crazy test began and both the 476s and the Insulator wax are holding up superbly.

I use Turtle wax's Ice line car wash soap and a wool wash mit.
The Ice line is supposed to have water conditioners in it - I guess so - the car rinses well, but anyway, that's what I'm using to wash the car.

We haven't had much rain here in Houston so the wash jobs aren't the type where I use a high concentration of soap to break through the slime one gets on his car when it DOES rain here. The wash water has been pretty weak as all I'm cleaning off is mostly dust and road shutz (and the occasional bug too).

After drying the car (synthetic chamois) the paint is still smooth and has that nice waxed feel.
So, so far we have draw, as far as the Bimmer is concerned.

Now, the black Mazdaspeed 3 is doing the same test but his wax seems to be thinning quicker than the silver BMW. Before I make any conclusions I have to say that neither of these cars were "treated" before waxing with the Collinte products - no Dawn wash to remove wax, no polishing or claying, nothing was done prior to the test short of washing the cars. Hey it's winter for crying out loud!

The Speed's thinning issues can be more attributed to his having many different waxes used on him - Rejex, Griots, Rain X and New Car Finish just to name a few. The remnats of these waxes may have challenged the Collinte products ability to adhere to the paint. I think the Speed 3 test may be somewhat compromised.

Having said that, he still beads water like crazy; the beads are just a bit bigger than the tight, small beads the BMW displays. We will carry on until he beads very little.

Is it because the Speed is black that the wax is having problems? Maybe, maybe not, but we will settle this account when the beading stops. At that point I'll Dawn wash the car, clay and polish it and do the 50-50 wax test again. It'll probably be summer by then and THAT will provide a really good torture test for these 2 waxes - black car/major sun exposure.
Sorry for this too long post but it's kinda fun testing these two waxes - I'll be back when somthing changes.
Cheers all! DV

Would like to see the final results. Especially after you do it in the summer time after properly preparing the surface after a good clay/polish session.

Thanks for the test

I think your test shows just why people can get varying experiences with the same product. An individual would make a snap decision as one often reads here and elsewhere (like garbage or great) based upon one simple test without ever knowing what they did not know on what affects a products performance. These are the guys who say "I used it once but it did not last" and then someone think the same results will apply to everyone else.

My car and truck are both holding out very very well with the 845 i used in the fall, great deep shin beading action lets the snow just slide off, very impressed,

I had the opportunity to get 3 or 4 of the 845 IW bottles at Harbot Freight for around $9 but I passed since I got 4 of the 476s. Kind of wish i would have gotten the 845 just to try

I just picked up 3 cans of 476 and 3 bottles of 845 at my local HF last week at $8 each, If I use both types, which one goes on first?

ther both the same, use one or the other.

i think the collinite is a good wax (paste sealant). I put two coats on my corolla in October and it is still going strong. I washed it this weekend with DP 4 in 1 rinseless wash and shine to get salt and slush off of it and then sprayed it with duragloss aquawax. 476 still going strong

I bought 845 insulator at a marine shop in the summer. Yesterday was sno nice, I got out to wash the wife and the wife's best friend's car. We had a detail fest, as we did vacumming, 303, glass, etc. on all our cars. Alas, just time to wash two.

Did salt away first, rinsed then washed with meguiars gold class. The cars (08 VW rabbit and 09 subaru impreza) came out looking fabulous. Despite lots of salt, and then a coating of dirt that remained (salt away rinses salt excellently, but it does not remove dirt), the cars came out perfect.

I then put 845 onto the subaru - its first wax. The car only has about 400 miles and the paint was smooth... so in the interest of time I went straight to waxing. Went on easy, came off perfect. I then did the horizontal surfaces on the rabbt. Perfect too.

I think that 845 is easier to work with, though the bottle it is in is a pain. Maybe mine lost the solvent, but it is solid (until you touch it - it melts on your hand), and does not flow from the bottle easily. But it spreads great, and a little definitely goes a long way.

It sure seems to buff off easier than the 476... dont know exactly why though... we shall see how it works out. If it is anything like the 476 in terms of longevity, then it will be great...

Did you shake the 845 first? It was almost a solid when I got mine , but after shaking it for about 30 seconds it became liquid.

Does the 845 have any cleaners in it? Collonite's cleaner is not recommended for dark colors, and mine needs a cleaner or polishing. I'm wondering if the 845 would be a nice wax base, for the 476s for my Dark Blue Metallic E-150? I'd rather not polish it just yet.

Thanks

I poured some 845 into a 4 ounce plastic bottle with a pour spout. It was a PITA to xfer from the larger Collinite bottle but now its much easier to pour onto an app or buffer pad.

For hand application I think paste waxes like 476S are far easier. 845 is fine for buffer application once you get it into a more usable bottle.

I let my 845 sit in a bowl of hot water for about 5 minutes before I shake it up and put it to use. I love the smell and ease of use of the 845

I shook mine real well, but it was in my 55F basement. Im sure warming it up a bit would help.

What I'd give to get either Collinite product for $8-$9 a hit!!!

Probably best I didn't tho- Collonite products go a long way and I'd probably die and have to leave 'em in my will...

Not sure what is in 845 Insulator Wax but it has stronger solvents than 476s.
845 will safely remove tape residue and price sticker residue from painted surfaces.
Now it does not work as well as Goo gone or lighter fluid but I know the 845 is safer.

On my car and truck i now use 845 first then I put on two coats of 476s. I tried three coats of 476s but I can’t see any improvement in shine after two coats. LOL
