YA it does smell of desperation but its not too late by far.Its hard to down size a company almost in half and not have turf battles ,thats why you need a outsider (no friendships to cloud and slow the process.)

It's called cleaning house and Ed Whitacre certainly appears to be the man to do it. So far, I'm impressed with him. Time will tell, though.

I would agree except only one guy left the company....the "moving deck chairs around" is a better analogy. If this is their re-organization...then they are doomed. They need guys 3 levels down...the whole VP level should be exterminated. They are the Rick Wagoner "yes men" an none of them could make a real decision if their lives depended on it.

This is Whitacres "show boat" move for Washington.

Bob lutz lost marketing to the new girl who's name escapes me ,shes now in charge of sales and marketing I think.
The more 'consulting from within' that Bob does the closer to the door he gets.imo

While I disagree with you more than agree - your comments above are really right on. My only hope is that they continue getting rid of about 7 more of them.

Maybe another American who understands reality....the $50billion in tax dollars is the only thing keeping them from the abyss....they "went down" last year. Now they are on life support and the people who have been running the company clearly don't haev a clue how to fix it. GM needs open heart surgery not a band aid.

The latest highly regarded vehicle launches shows a positive change in the model lineup. Please give it time as GM is so messed up it will not self-correct overnight. Now the Upper Mgt is another thing - change is occuring there but I agree perhaps not exactly how I would like it.

GM will not correct overnight- true, everyone thinks the worst is over for them because the bk is done,in fact the tough work is all ahead.
Dont write them off yet ,remember Ford started this same process in 2006.
GM has a long way to go .
eg the new Equinox is being very well received and is direct competition(better than) the Ford Escape which is selling like hotcakes here

I'd love for GM to be eliminated because they built so many bad cars.

My ION was supposed to be as good as a Toyota Corolla, but it didn't turn out that way.

As far as I am concerned they are a bunch of theives and need to eliminated for that.

Plenty of Americans see it that way as well.

Yes because their latest cars are all complete and utter [censored] too. Get real. Toyota, honda, subaru, Hyundai, when they all first came to the US their cars were TRULY AWFUL. At some point in their history, all car companies have made bad cars. GM isn't the only one.

My dad had a 1971 Toyota Corolla and he said it was one of the best cars he ever owned. In the 6 years he had it, he had no mechanical problems, despite having to run the engine near redline when driving on the highway.

He also had some friends with Datsun 240z and 260z cars, and his friends had little trouble as well.

The vast majority of Toyota cars were reliable, but not all were popular. The only bad Toyota that comes to my mind right now is the Tercel.

However, Nissan made several troublesome Maximas during the 80s and early 90s, almost no good Sentras after 1995, and when Nissan made the 3.3 that entered into some Pathfinders, Xtrerras, and Pathfinders, Nissan suffered so much financial trouble that they were sold to Renault.

So bad cars turn around and bite the manufacturer in the butt.

It doesn't matter how great a car is if they build something that a previous owner can't forgive them.

Also, GM has been claiming that their cars have been built to compete back in the 1980s, yet most of their cars disproved that. They said that their cars were built right in the 1990s, but nearly every V6 they built disproved that. So if they say it now, how are people going to know for sure that 10 years from now, the car will still be in good shape?
